On this Day in History: January 31, 1961 - The United States sends its first monkey into space, Ham the chimpanzee. His Mercury/Redstone 2 achieves an altitude of 158 miles, a 19-minute ride that subjects Ham to a force of 16 times gravity. The space ape splashes down safely, his capsule is plucked from the ocean by the USS Donner.
Born on this Day in History: January 31, 1919 - Jackie Robinson (1919 - 1972) Georgia baseball player Jackie Robinson became a star for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, making him the first African-American major league player. Robinson was Rookie of the Year in 1947, league batting champion and 1949 M.V.P. His creation of the Freedom National Bank in 1964 made him the first African-American VP of a major U.S. corporation.
