Born on this Day in History January 17, 1942 - Muhammad Ali (1942 - ) Born in Louisville, Kentucky, boxer Muhammad Ali won the heavyweight title in 1964. In 1967, he refused to be drafted into the army on religious grounds. He was stripped of his title and barred from the ring, but a Supreme Court decision overturned the ruling. Ali racked up 56 wins—37 of them knockouts—before retiring in 1981.
