Movies, In the News, and Enjoy

Movies - Laura and I enjoyed a festive four-day weekend. It was difficult returning to mine office after four days of lounging! It became particularly uninviting when I walked to Mr. Nitro R/T and saw that he was fully encased in frost!

Caution bade me to exercise patience. Soon, Mr. Nitro's defroster, the warmth of the sun, and judicious employment of Mr. Nitro's windshield wipers cleared the windshield sufficiently to allow safe travel to mine office.

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas dinner: Roast chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, dressing, cranberry sauce, and Brussels sprouts.

Until Laura gleefully displayed the Brussels sprouts she purchased at Raley's, I had never seen the little cabbages fresh from the garden! I was amazed to see how they grow!

    We watched several movies:
We thoroughly enjoyed Out of Time. The film stars Denzel Washington and Eva Mendes. I recommend this movie highly.

We watched The Equalizer. This is a great movie with non-stop action, great acting, and a great story. Denzel Washington plays a man with a mysterious past who is driven to help those in need of help. I highly recommend it.

We enjoyed The November Man. Pierce Brosnan plays an ex-CIA operative brought back in on a very personal mission. I recommend this movie. It has great action and many surprises.

We watched Maleficent. We thoroughly enjoyed Angelina Jolie's performance. The combines elements of several fairy tales—most noteably "Sleeping Beauty." Laura enjoyed the movie so much that she re-watched it several times. We highly recommend it.

We watched The Interview for a few minutes. It was so foul that we found ourselves unable to continue watching it. I cannot recommend this movie.

    Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve - Today is Christmas Eve!

Christmas Eve is the evening or day before Christmas Day. It occurs on December 24 in Western Christianity and the secular world, and is considered one of the most culturally significant celebrations in Christendom and Western society, where it is widely observed by Christians and by many others, as a full or partial holiday in anticipation of Christmas Day.

Christmas celebrations have long begun on the night of the 24th, due in part to the Christian liturgical day starting at sunset—a practice inherited from Jewish tradition and based on the story of Creation in the Book of Genesis: "And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day."

Tradition holds that Jesus was born at night (Luke 2:6-8).
The idea of Jesus being born at night is reflected in the fact that Christmas Eve is referred to as Heilige Nacht (Holy Night) in German, Nochebuena (the Good Night) in Spanish and similarly in other expressions of Christmas spirituality, such as the song "Silent Night, Holy Night."

Many other varying cultural traditions and experiences are also associated with Christmas Eve around the world—including the gathering of family and friends, the singing of Christmas carols, the illumination and enjoyment of Christmas lights, trees, and other decorations, the wrapping and/or opening of gifts, and general preparation for Christmas Day.

Roots Day, In the News, and Enjoy

    - Today is Roots Day!

The holiday season is a time for family functions and gatherings. It is the perfect time to celebrate one's roots! Many people take their family history and ancestry for granted. They never take the time to learn about their ancestors and the history of their family names.

It is our genealogy that makes us who we are today. Talk with other family members—especially older family members—and take the time to learn a few things about your family.

Also, consider the creation of a family tree. There are several free Web sites that can help you easily create your family tree. Enjoy National Roots Day!
