Halloween, In the News, and Enjoy

Halloween - Today is Halloween!

Halloween or Hallowe'en (/ˌhæləˈwiːn, -oʊˈiːn, ˌhɑːl-/; a contraction of "All Hallows' Evening"), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day.

It initiates the triduum of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. Within Allhallowtide, the traditional focus of All Hallows' Eve revolves around the theme of using "humor and ridicule to confront the power of death."

According to many scholars, All Hallows' Eve is a Christianized feast initially influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic Samhain.

Other scholars maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots.

Housebound, In the News, and Enjoy

Housebound - Housebound is truly a peculiar movie.

The story is rather simple: Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there.

IMDB calls this a horror movie and gives it a 7.1 rating. I call it horrible and rate it at 3.0.

The movie has one redeeming quality: Comedy. Without the instances of humor, the movie would fall fully flat. As it is, it does provide amodicum of entertainment.

It would be considerably more entertaining were I able to understand the dialogue. The heavy New Zealand accent made it difficult to understand what was being said.

There are so many movies that are more deserving of viewing that I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this movie.

International Internet Day, In the News, and Enjoy

International Internet Day - Today is International Internet Day!

International Internet Day is celebrated worldwide, every year on 29th of October. Since the year 2005 the International Internet Day has been famously celebrated to commemorate the sending of the first electronic message which was transferred from one computer to another in California in 1969.

The International Internet Day project is open to everyone and anyone just as access to the Internet is open and free for everyone.

At the time when history was being made, Internet was known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). In 1969 Charley Kline, a student programmer at the UCLA, transmitted the first ever message on October 29, 1969.

Leonard Kleinrock transmitted a message from the computer housed at UCLA to a computer at the Stanford Research Institute.

The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching, using standard IP (Internet Protocol). Now Internet has become one of the most important part of our life. Most of us cannot think of spending one day without Internet. Internet has made our lives much easier.

Hercules - Laura and I thoroughly enjoyed Hercules.

I generally strongly dislike period piece movies. I admit having a strong bias, and I really expected to dislike Hercules.
Laura enjoys such movies, and Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) is a favorite of hers, so I was fully prepared to endure watching the movie so that Laura could enjoy it, as I anticipated she would.

However, the movie was so well produced, the acting was so fine, the special effects were so awesome, and the balance of violent war and humor quickly had me perched at the edge of my chair—where I stayed throughout the movie!

Based upon the Greek legend, Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle.

Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls. The King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time.

I very highly recommend this movie to all!
