Born on this day in history: September 1, 1957 - Gloria Estefan (1957-) Born Gloria Fajardo in Havana, singer Gloria Estefan fled Cuba when Castro gained power. In 1978, she married keyboardist Emilio Estefan, and their first Miami Sound Machine disco hit was "Dr. Beat" in 1980. In 1990, Estefan suffered a broken back in a car accident and had to make a grueling recovery.

The Giant Olive The Giant Olive on the outskirts of town quickly won the admiration of many and was the subject of a television report. Unfortunately, someone defaced the olive over the weekend.
