On this day in history: September 8, 1888 - The "terribly mutilated" body of prostitute Annie Chapman is found in the backyard of 29 Hanbury Street, Spitalfields. It is the second known victim attributed to Jack the Ripper.

Born on this day in history: September 8, 1924 - Grace Metalious (1924 - 1964) novelist. She wrote "Peyton Place," 1956 which was adapted into a movie and TV series.
