Born on this day in history: December 23, 1964 - Eddie Vedder (1964 - ) Illinois, rocker Eddie Vedder shot to the top of the music charts when he fronted the band Pearl Jam in 1990. Vedder and his group became leaders of the grunge movement with their first album, "Ten" (1991), which became an instant hit. Vedder went on to contribute to several soundtracks such as Dead Man Walking, I Am Sam, and Into the Wild.

While I Slept
I awakened to the sound of a kitten mewing. I opened my eyes and was greatly surprised to see a tiny kitten—no more than 5 inches from head to bottom—perched upon my pillow, making his little kitten sounds and batting at my nose with his right forepaw. As my eyes became accustomed to the dim, early morning light, I saw that—while his body was that of a very young kitten—his face was that of a much older cat and mirrored exactly the face of my cat, Zeus. I heard sounds coming elsewhere in the house and called to Laura—asking her how this kitten came to be on my pillow. When she entered the room, she said,"What kitten?" I had been playing with the kitten. He had been nipping at my fingers and batting me with his forepaws. "This kitten." I said, turning to look at my new companion. Imagine my surprise when I saw that it was Zeus! I could offer no explanation. Laura shrugged her shoulders and left the room.
