On this day in history: December 22, 2001 - Richard Reid attempts to blow up an American Airlines transatlantic flight by igniting a plastic explosive concealed in his shoe. Other passengers beat the living daylights out of him.

Born on this day in history: December 22, 1945 - Diane Sawyer (1945 - ) Broadcast journalist Diane Sawyer began her career in 1967 as a weathergirl. She then became a Nixon press aide in 1970. Returning to TV news in 1984, Sawyer was the first woman correspondent on
"60 Minutes," and in 1989 she joined ABC News. In 2009, she announced that she would be leaving "Good Morning America" to become the anchor for "ABC World News."
