Born on this day in history: October 16, 1854 - Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900 ) Irish-born Oscar Wilde came to fame with his book The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891). His comic plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest (1895) reflect Wilde's involvement in the 19th-century Aesthetic movement, which advocated art for art's sake. He was also the object of criminal suits involving homosexuality, resulting in his imprisonment.
