Born on this day in history: December 31, 1937 - Sir Anthony Hopkins (1937 - ) Born in Port Talbot, Wales, actor Anthony Hopkins made his stage debut in 1960, then went on to appear in films, including The Elephant Man (1980). He gained worldwide fame for his Oscar-winning performance as serial killer Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Hopkins was knighted in 1993, and became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

On this day in history: December 30, 1977 - Ted Bundy escapes from a jail in Aspen, Colorado by using a hacksaw. He moves to Chicago, then Michigan, Atlanta, and finally Florida, where he commits a series of grotesque murders.
Born on this day in history: December 30, 1928 - Bo Diddley (1928-2008) Singer, songwriter, musician and rock pioneer Bo Diddley was born Ellas Bates (some reports say Otha Ellas Bates) on December 30, 1928, in McComb, Mississippi. Bo Diddley, with his infectious rhythms and strong guitar work, was one of the early pioneers of rock and roll music. At a young age, he was sent to live with one of her cousins, Gussie McDaniel, in Chicago. McDaniel adopted him and he took her last name. For years, he studied violin. Then after hearing the music of blues legend John Lee Hooker, he switched to the guitar. Diddley attended vocational school for a time, learning how to make violins and guitars. But he eventually dropped out. After working odd jobs and playing on street corners, Diddley started getting gigs at neighbor bars in Chicago. In 1955, he scored a recording contract with Checker, a subsidiary of the well-known blues label Chess Records. That year he scored his first rhythm and blues (R&B) hit with the self-titled single "Bo Diddley" and its B-side "I'm a Man." Diddley then reached the top 40 charts with "Pretty Things" in 1956. Other famous songs include "Who Do You Love," "Mona," and "Before You Accuse Me." Appearing on television, touring, and recording new material, Diddley remained popular until the mid-1960s. As rock and roll tastes changed, he started producing few albums, which weren't met with the same enthusiasm as earlier efforts. Still he remained a powerful live performer who toured heavily. A 1979 tour with the punk rock group, The Clash, introduced Diddley to new audiences. In 1987, Diddley was recognized for his role as a pioneering force in music by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, he won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Awards in 1996. That same year, he released his last studio album, Man Amongst Men, which was warmly received by critics. Sometimes called "The Originator," Diddley has inspired countless acts that have followed in his musical footsteps, including Buddy Holly, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and the Doors. Diddley died of heart failure June 2, 2008, at his home in Archer, Florida.

The Weather Rain fell throughout the night. Apparently, it was not heavy rainfall. It is not raining now, and it is not forecast to rain today. There is a chance of showers in the early evening. Rain is forecast for tomorrow and Friday. Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be sunny and warm. Today is considerably warmer than yesterday. It is 44° currently and forecast to reach 52° this afternoon. It was pleasant encountering no rime upon Mr. Nitro this morning!

I took this photograph at a meeting of the board of directors for the Corning Healthcare District last evening. The board broke ground last week for the Meuser Memorial Health Center, to be built near the southeast corner of Marguerite Avenue and Solano Street. The site is the same location where Corning Memorial Hospital once stood. It is named after one of Corning's former doctors, Dr. Arthur Meuser. County Social Services, County Health Services, County Mental Health Services, and Quest Diagnostics will be housed in the new facility. The 10,000+-square-foot center will also be used for staff training and free health information classes for the public. The facility is scheduled to open in June, 2010. Click to enlarge.

While I Slept I awakened to the sound of a kitten mewing. I opened my eyes and was greatly surprised to see a tiny kitten—no more than 5 inches from head to bottom—perched upon my pillow, making his little kitten sounds and batting at my nose with his right forepaw. As my eyes became accustomed to the dim, early morning light, I saw that—while his body was that of a very young kitten—his face was that of a much older cat and mirrored exactly the face of my cat, Zeus. I heard sounds coming elsewhere in the house and called to Laura—asking her how this kitten came to be on my pillow. When she entered the room, she said,"What kitten?" I had been playing with the kitten. He had been nipping at my fingers and batting me with his forepaws. "This kitten." I said, turning to look at my new companion. Imagine my surprise when I saw that it was Zeus! I could offer no explanation. Laura shrugged her shoulders and left the room.

The Weekend in Review My plans of tossing a large hunk of sirloin onto the Weber vanished quickly Saturday morning when I peered outside and evaluated the day's weather—interpolating AcuWeather's forecast into my prognostication. Instead, I stewed the large sirloin roast in a pot. I seared all sides in extra-virgin olive oil then added two cups of Merlot, one cup of spring water, a quantity of Pappy's seasoning, several dashes of Red Monkey Mango Habanera seasoning, parsley flakes, Monterey steak seasoning, ground Cayenne pepper, whole mushrooms, large carrots (cut into 1-inch lengths), a large white onion (cut into six sections), six large stalks of celery (cut into 1-inch lengths), six large Jalapeños (cut into eights), four large Roma tomatoes (cut into sixths), two large heads of garlic (peeled), and six medium red potatoes (quartered). This cooked for four hours. It was absolutely wonderful. A quantity of leftover stew followed Laura to Chico this morning for her lunch. We shall have a redux of Saturday's dinner tomorrow evening. The remaining sirloin will then be used to make burritos later in the week.
Sunday morning, I performed with the worship team using my new guitar for the first time. It is a wonderful instrument.
Last evening, I made Jalapeño-bacon cheeseburgers and oven fries. I sautéed ground sirloin patties and sliced Jalapeños. I cut large baking potatoes into thin sections and placed in a bag with seasonings and extra-virgin olive oil. I massaged the bag to thoroughly coat the fries. I baked them in the conventional oven at 400°. Laura tended to the meal at this point. She placed the sautéed Jalapeño slices, bacon slices, and extra-sharp cheddar cheese slices atop the patties and turned the oven to broil. She toasted whole-wheat burger buns, and took everything to the table. We assembled our burgers—adding condiments large tomato slices. It was a delightful meal.

Last Evening Laura attended the Sierra Nevada "Hoppy Awards" last evening. She received an award for her participation in the program, the focus of which is the promotion of a healthful lifestyle. I could not attend, since I had a scheduling conflict. I had to attend a rehearsal with the worship team at Harvest Christian Center. This was the début of Mr. Fender. All found him to be most resplendent, and he was a joy to play. I enthusiastically anticipate his formal introduction to the congregation this Sunday!

Born on this day in history: December 14, 1946 - Patty Duke (1946 - ) Born Anna Marie Duke on December 14, 1946 in Elmhurst, New York. Patty Duke's first big role came in 1951 when she was cast as Helen Keller in the Broadway version of The Miracle Worker. In 1962, the play was turned into a feature film, and Patty won an Academy Award for best supporting actress. She was the youngest person ever to win the award.

The Weather We have enjoyed fairly mild weather for the last few days. Yesterday, temperatures were in the high 50s, and it remained dry throughout the day. It is currently 45°, and we should see mid-50° temperatures this afternoon. It rained a bit during the night, but it is clear and dry currently.
Worship and the New Guitar Laura sang with the worship team at Harvest Christian Center and I played guitar. Yesterday was the final engagement for my Samick Strat. Today, I shall take delivery of a Black Cherry Burst Special Edition Custom Telecaster® FMT HH! Click to enlarge.
The Festival There was a festival in the parking lot of the Catholic Church—just across the street from out house. There were several dozen horses, a musical group, and hundreds of attendees. I photographed the event and shall have samples online in the next few days.

WET! At least it is not cold! It is 40° presently—considerably warmer than the sub-20° weather that has greeted us for the last several mornings. It is, however, wet! A full week of rain is forecast. Without the cryogenic temperatures, we shall have no snow. This is a good thing: Snow is so rare here (generally, snow is seen here only for a day each 10-12 years) that few are able to drive safely in it! Click to enlarge.

Warmer Proving the adage that "all things are relative," this morning seems positively tropical at 25° when compared with yesterday's 16° weather! It took only a few seconds for me to realize that it is still cold, and my longing for summer has not diminished perceptibly.
Mr. Nitro Laura is taking Mr. Nitro to Chico this morning. A warning light is glowing—indicating that his emissions-control system requires maintenance. We are great pals, and it is difficult for me being removed from him, but it is reassuring knowing that Laura will give him the care and attention he requires.

Laura just redeemed Mr. Nitro from Patterson's Auto World. They thoroughly cleaned him. Is he not beautiful? If only the weatherpeople are incorrect. Mr. Nitro would enjoy another sunny day like today instead of the rain that is predicted to begin tomorrow!

Imagine my surprise (truthfully!) when I received a Google Alert indicating that this blog listed as a source for information concerning new channels to be offered via Roku in an article in the Wall Street Journal! COLD! This morning is the coldest that it has been here in Corning since December 21, 1939! It was 24° during the night, and the temperature had increased to a mere 27° when I arrived at my office at 7:30 AM! Yikes! Interestingly, it is so dry that there was no ice on Mr. Nitro's windshield! Were there to be rain at these temperatures, certainly we would have snow—something that is experienced here very rarely;. The last snow here was ten years ago.

Happy Thanksgiving! If the current weather forecasts prove to be correct, we shall enjoy beautiful weather here tomorrow. Earlier forecasts called for rain on Thanksgiving day, but the rain is now predicted to arrive on Friday.
Laura and I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. We shall be enjoying a small gathering for Thanksgiving—just the two of us and our cats, Zeus and Thor. We shall have a festive time. We shall have New York strip steaks and eggs for breakfast. The Thanksgiving meal will be turkey breast, stuffing (made with hot Italian sausage, cubed and toasted sourdough bread, mushrooms, white onions, garlic, celery, Jalapeño peppers, seasonings, and chicken stock), mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, Brussels sprouts, cranberry sauce, and champagne. I shall be pleased, should current weather forecasts hold—in particular, since I intend to roast the turkey breast on our Weber grill. I also intend to do the final cooking of the stuffing on the Weber.
Many of you will be traveling to enjoy Thanksgiving with relatives and friends. Please drive with great caution and return safely!
There will be no blog post Thursday or Friday. Enjoy!

Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 I began using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 yesterday. It is an excellent product, with many enhancements and new features. I recommend it highly!
The Weather The weather promises to be pleasant today: The low during darktime was 40°, and the forecast high is 70°. There is but a slight breeze. It is sunny, and the sky is clear. Hopefully, this weather will continue through Thanksgiving. It would be wonderful to have pleasant weather—in particular, since I shall be grilling a turkey breast. I also intend to complete the cooking of the dressing on the Weber grill.

The Weather The weather was graciously warm and sunny Saturday. Hometown Christmas was successful. Rain had been forecast for Saturday, but it was a beautiful day! I shall share some photographs of the event soon.
On this day in history: November 20, 1912 - Mad Bomber Carl Warr enters Los Angeles city jail with 60 sticks of dynamite strapped to himself. After an hour, two detectives attack Warr who then pulls the bomb's trigger. Nothing happens, and the freakishly masked bomber begs police to kill him.
Born on this day in history: November 20, 1946 - Duane Allman (1946 - ) Howard Duane Allman was born in Nashville, Tennessee on November 20, 1946. Duane, as he was known, and his brother, Gregg, were raised by their mother Geraldine Allman after their father, Willis, was murdered when Duane was just 3-years-old. Geraldine, "Mama A" moved with her boys to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1957. Once Gregg heard a neighbor playing guitar, he decided that he needed to learn the instrument. Duane soon followed suit, and became an even better player than his brother. The boys were influenced by the bluesy music of artists such as B.B King, whom they saw in concert while teenagers. Duane dropped out of high school to stay home and practice guitar and when Gregg graduated from Sea Breeze High School in 1965, the young men formed their first official band, the Allman Joys. When the Allman Joys became The Hour Glass in 1967, the group moved to Los Angeles. During this time, Duane perfected his electric slide guitar technique, using an empty Coricidin glass bottle over his ring finger as a slide.

The Weather The weather reports have changed so often during the week that one is left with great uncertainty regarding what sort of weather Hometown Christmas will encounter. Early this week, most forecasts predicted rain on Wednesday, heavy rain on Friday, and sunshine on Saturday. Yesterday, forecasters predicted heavy rain beginning Friday and lasting into next week. A major storm was predicted. The forecast for Saturday turned from sunshine to rain. This morning, forecasts call for rain late this morning and again this evening and sunshine and clear skies Saturday through next Thursday. I shall arise in the morning and peer outside. I will then be able to predict the weather with some degree of accuracy!
Hometown Christmas Corning's annual Hometown Christmas will take place Saturday, November 21—featuring Downtown Corning food vendors, craft vendors, live Nativity scene, pictures with Santa, and a lighted parade.
