Impaired Driving, In the News, and Enjoy

Impaired Driving - While journeying to mine office this morning, I narrowly escaped being crashed into by a woman who had a cell phone held firmly against her right ear, driving with her left hand on the steering wheel, obviously giving most of her attention to the conversation she was having, and giving precious little attention to her driving.

Had I been less attentive, had I been similarly impaired, or had Mr. Nitro R/T been incapable of summoning the requisite performance and agility to quickly distance me from this creature, I would most certainly been an accident victim!

Fortunately, I was able to avoid being struck by this loathsome beast and suffered only the unsettling emotional discomfort that followed necessarily.

Once the immediacy of potential collision had passed, I pulled to the side of the street, parked, and attempted to note her license plate number. Traffic did not allow me to do so, so this event will not be reported.

Impaired driving is dangerous. It is the cause of more than half of all car crashes. Impaired driving is operating a motor vehicle while you are affected by any of the following:

  • Alcohol
  • Legal or illegal drugs
  • Sleepiness
  • Distractions, such as using a cell phone or texting
  • Having a medical condition which affects your driving

For your safety and the safety of others, do not drive while impaired. Have someone else drive you or take public transportation when you cannot drive. If you need to take a call or send a text message, pull to the side of the roadway and park while using your cell phone.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Americans spend about one hour and 15 minutes in their vehicles every day.

People often treat this as a time to multitask and tend other daily activities. With today’s proliferation of mobile devices, dashboard technologies, and other tools that provide easy access to information, entertainment, and communications, in-vehicle distractions are increasing.

Studies show that drivers spend more than half their time behind the wheel engaged in potentially distracting behavior.

When you are driving, you are operating a piece of heavy machinery at high speed. You are navigating across changing terrain, calculating speeds and distances, and responding to all the other drivers and obstacles around you. Adding one more activity—even talking to your passengers or changing a radio station—can be enough to make you lose control of your vehicle or fail to respond in an emergency.

Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware, In the News, and Enjoy

    Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware

    - I often observe—without surprise—that many clients employ no anti-virus nor anti-malware protection. Many buy new computers with trial versions of Norton or McAfee products installed, and when the trial periods end, these users simply ignore this and continue prowling the Internet without concern. They soon find their systems infected and are unjustifiably surprised.

Others simply do not recognize the peril of operating a computer without anti-virus and anti-malware applications installed.

Similarly, many smartphone and tablet users ignore the lack of security which faces them and operate their Android, Windows, or iOS mobile devices without concern for security.

There are also those who do recognize the necessity to properly address the virus and malware threats and seek guidance regarding what applications to use. I routinely share what applications I use and recommend, and I shall present this information here:

On our three desktop and two laptop Windows 7 systems, I use Microsoft Security Essentials. This is a wonderful application that is offered free from Microsoft.

Microsoft Security Essentials can be downloaded from HERE

I also use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on all my Windows systems.
This is an extremely powerful security application that is capable of finding and removing threats that are not addressable otherwise.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware can be downloaded from HERE

On our two Android smartphones and our four Android tablets, I use AVG to protect them from virus and malware threats. The AVG mobile application is free and additionally locates lost phones.

AVG Anti-Virus can be downloaded from HERE

    Ribs, Pizza, and Enjoy!

Ribs - Saturday, we produced an excellent rack of baby back ribs.

Laura put an excellent rub on a large rack of baby back ribs. She used our favorite blend of garlic-pepper seasoning, Pappy's Seasoning, Gebhardt's chili powder, ground black pepper, and brown sugar. She then placed the rack in the refrigerator, where it rested for several hours.

Laura ignited our Weber grill, cleaned the grate, and placed the rack of ribs directly over the three left-hand burners. The burners were on high; the meat side of the ribs was facing the flame.

After 15 minutes, she turned the ribs.

After 30 minutes, she moved the ribs to the right-hand side of the grill and continued cooking them using indirect heat.

She sprayed the ribs every 15 minutes with a mixture of three parts apple cider vinegar and one part olive oil.

After two hours, Laura applied a swabbing of Stubbs sauce to half the rack.

She cooked the ribs for another hour and took them to the table.

    They were absolutely wonderful!

While Laura tended the grill, I produced a stellar batch of Cajun rice and beans. It was an excellent complement to the ribs!

We feasted upon this delightful meal until we were sated. The leftovers provided a particularly delicious brunch Sunday after church.

Pizza - Sunday evening, Laura produced a succulent pizza.

She used a thin pizza crust, brushed it with extra-virgin olive oil, and topped it with pizza sauce, sun-dried tomatoes, red peppers, pepperoni, mushrooms, and cheeses. Leftovers followed us to work this morning.

The Eve of September 11, God Is Great!, and Enjoy!

The Eve of September 11 - Tomorrow is the anniversary of September 11, 2001. I pray that there are no acts of terrorism attempted on this day!

The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11 were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

God Is Great! - My Nexus 7 2013 tablet fell victim to a failed firmware update recently and was sent to an ASUS repair facility.

I waited (im)patiently for it to be repaired and returned to me. I received an email notification that it had been repaired and was on its way back to me. The estimated arrival was Tuesday, September 11 (today). I left my office at 3:30 PM yesterday. As I turned onto Solano Street, I saw a FedEx truck stop in the vicinity of my office. Generally, I do not take this route when going home at the end of the day. Generally, I take back streets that do not reach Solano Street for several blocks.

I saw the delivery person walk to the front door of my office. In his hand was a box. I quickly slithered Mr. Nitro R/T to the curb, hopped from his cabin, and skittered to the delivery person, calling out to him! I took the package from him, returned to Mr. Nitro R/T, and journeyed to our home. I opened the box, removed my repaired Nexus 7 2013, and began the process of restoring my accounts and apps.

Had God not directed me to take the route I took, I would not have encountered the FedEx truck, and I would not have my Nexus 7 2013 here with me!

God is great! Thank you, God!

    Just Because Day and Enjoy!

Just Because Day - Today is Just Because Day. Finally, you have a chance to do something without a reason. Most often in life, we do things because we have to, or we want to, or it is expected of us. None of those reasons apply today.

Is there something you would like to do, but there is no reason or logic for doing it? Well, today is the day to go out and do something "just because."

It is most enjoyable if it is an uncommon, or unexpected activity or action. Perhaps, you have something in mind. If not, just go with the first thing that comes to your mind.

To get you started, here are some of our suggestions for Just Because Day:

  • Take an unplanned day of vacation
  • Visit someone you haven't seen in a while
  • Knock on someone's door and compliment them for their great lawn
  • Skip, do not walk
  • Spin a wheel, and bicycle in the opposite direction of where the arrow points.
  • Buy something you do not need
  • Jump in a puddle
  • Walk backwards
