    Born on this Day in History: December 1, 1945 - Hawaiian-born Bette Midler ("The Divine Miss M") first appeared on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof (1966–1969), then created a popular nightclub act with an unknown Barry Manilow as her pianist. Greater stage and screen success followed,
    with movie roles in The Rose and For the Boys earning her Oscar nominations. Her song "Wind Beneath My Wings" from the movie Beaches became a huge hit in 1968.






    On this Day in History: December 1, 1997 - Member of the Georgia Senate Ralph Abernathy attempts to smuggle marijuana into the US from Jamaica in his underwear. He is caught by a drug-sniffing canine and fined $500. Abernathy is the son of the famous civil rights leader of the same name who was Martin Luther King's lieutenant. In January he is censured by the Georgia State Senate.
