Born on this Day in History: October 31, 1950 - Journalist Jane Pauley was one of the best known morning TV personalities during the 1970s and 1980s, anchoring NBC's Today show for 13 years and Dateline NBC for another 12. Her work as been recognized with an Emmy and an American in Radio and Television Award. Aside from reporting, Pauley has written a book about her struggle with bipolar disorder titled, Skywriting: A Life out of the Blue.

She starred in Steel Magnolias in 1988 and earned an Academy Award nomination. Her most iconic role was in Pretty Woman with actor Richard Gere. Roberts won an Oscar for Erin Brockovich. She has been one of the highest paid actors and biggest box office earners in Hollywood
On this Day in History: October 28, 1922 - Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini seizes power in Italy, with the assistance of the Catholic Church. Pope Pius XI declared "Mussolini is a man sent by divine providence." In return for this endorsement, the silly dictator signs the Lateran treaty, restoring papal sovereignty over the Vatican. But at least the trains run on time.

Born on this Day in History: October 27, 1932 - Sylvia Plath was a gifted, troubled poet, known for her confessional style work. Winning a scholarship to Smith College in 1950, she eventually went on to work as an editor for Mademoiselle magazine. After her husband Ted Hughes cheated on her, she fell into a deep depression. Before committing suicide at age 30, Plath had written hundreds of poems and a novel about mental breakdown, The Bell Jar.

Born on this Day in History: October 26, 1967 - Keith Urban decided to pursue a solo career in the late 1990s. In 2000, he released his first self-titled solo album. In 2001, he was named Top New Male Vocalist at the CMA Awards. He toured in 2004 and was named CMA's Entertainer of the Year the following year. In 2006 he won his first Grammy. In 2008 he toured and was nominated for Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association.
On this Day in History: October 26, 1997 - Basketball great Charles Barkley is charged with aggravated battery and resisting arrest after throwing 20-year-old man Jorge Lugo through a plate glass window in an Orlando, Florida dance club. Barkley later tells reporters: "I regret we weren't on a higher floor."

Born on this Day in History: October 24, 1936 - Bill Wyman was born October 24, 1936 in Lewishman, England. Following service in the Royal Navy, Wyman taught himself bass and auditioned for The Rolling Stones in 1962. The band became successful throughout the 1960's and 1970's, which Wyman used to launch a solo career that continues to this day.
On this Day in History: October 24, 1989 - Televangelist Jim Bakker receives 45 years and a $500,000 fine for defrauding investors of $3.7M. Bakker had already been dismissed from his PTL ministry, so the criminal penalties probably just added insult to injury.

She went on to play supporting roles in films, write books and revise Hollywood scripts.
On this Day in History: October 21, 1987 - Former Miss America Bess Myerson arrested on charges of bribery, conspiracy, and mail fraud, all involving an alimony-fixing scandal. She was found not guilty, however.

Born on this Day in History: September October 18, 1926 - Chuck Berry (1926 - ) Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Chuck Berry had early exposure to music at school and church. As a teen, he was sent to prison for three years for armed robbery. He began producing hits in the 1950s, and had his first number one hit, "My Ding-a-Ling," in 1972. With his clever lyrics and distinctive sounds, he was one of the most influential figures in the history of rock music.
On this Day in History: October 18, 1974 - The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, based loosely on Ed Gein's story and originally titled Headcheese, opens in theatres. One critic describes the film as "a vile piece of sick crap," containing "unrelenting sadistic violence as extreme and hideous as a complete lack of imagination can possibly make it." The movie is later banned in Germany and the UK.

Born on this Day in History: September October 17, 1918 - Rita Hayworth (1918 - 1987) American film bombshell Rita Hayworth was trained as a dancer until her film debut at age 16 in Dante's Inferno (1935). It wasn't until her appearance in The Strawberry Blonde (1941) that she began her ascent to stardom. She is best known for her performance in Charles Vidor's Gilda (1946). Her career ended with Ralph Nelson's The Wrath of God (1972). She died of Alzheimer's disease.
On this Day in History: October 17, 1967 - The controversial play Hair, full of dancing naked people, unshaved armpits, and body odor, opens at the 299-seat Anspacher Theater on Broadway.
