The National Day of Prayer is an annual day of observance held on the first Thursday of May, designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation."
Each year since its inception, the president has signed a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.
The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952; however, days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation.
The constitutionality of the National Day of Prayer was unsuccessfully challenged in court by the Freedom From Religion Foundation after their first attempt was unanimously dismissed by a federal appellate court in April 2011.

National Day of Prayer - The National Day of Prayer calls on all people of different faiths in the United States to pray for the nation and its leaders. It is held on the first Thursday of May each year. National Truffle Day -
May 2 celebrates a food holiday: it is National Truffle Day. On this day, the deliciously sweet chocolate truffle gets the spotlight. This chocolate confectionery is traditionally made with a chocolate ganache center coated in chocolate, icing, cocoa powder, chopped nuts or coconut. The truffle may be filled with other fillings such as cream, melted chocolate, caramel, nuts, fruit, nougat, fudge, toffee, mint, marshmallow or liqueur. N. Petruccelli of Chambery, France is believed to be the inventor of the chocolate truffle in December, 1895. Truffles became much more popular in 1902 when Prestat Chocolate Shop opened in London. Prestat stills sells "Napoleon III" truffles made to the original recipe. Parents Seize Creative Control Of 3rd-Grade Art Project - PHILADELPHIA — Following a series of creative disputes, third-grade student Jeffrey Milner has been removed from day-to-day control of the "What I Want More Than Anything"" assignment he is required to hand in during art class tomorrow, household sources confirmed Tuesday. "While we appreciate Jeffrey’s contributions to the project, his repeated rejections of outside input have unfortunately made it necessary for us to step in and institute some controls," the 9-year-old's mother, Bethany, said while sprinkling glitter on a freshly poured line of glue. "In the end, we felt that taking him off the project was the only way to salvage the hard work of everyone involved, including those of us who have funded this venture. He is, of course, a talented artist, and we hope to work with him again sometime in the future." Jeffrey’s parents added that his name will still appear on the finished product and that his creative input will continue to be welcomed in a consulting capacity.
There are three main types of chocolate truffles: American, European and Swiss. The American Truffle: Created in the mid 1980′s by San Francisco chocolatier, Joseph Schmidt. A half-egg shaped chocolate coated truffle made with a mixture of dark or milk chocolate, butterfat and sometimes coconut oil.

On this day in history: May 1, 1942 - The 215th and final hanging occurs at California's San Quentin maximum security prison. Subsequent executions utilize the facility's gas chamber, and ultimately, inmate's choice of that or lethal injection.
Born on this day in history: May 1, 1939 - Judy Collins (1939-) Born in Seattle, WA, singer Judy Collins was a piano prodigy but switched to guitar, releasing her first album in 1961, at 22, and a gold album in 1967, "Wildflowers." Later albums, like 1968's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," produced by then-boyfriend Stephen Stills, established her reputation. Collins wrote a memoir, "Trust Your Heart," two novels, and directed 1974 documentary "Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman."

The wind has abated! The wind that has plagued us for the last several days appears to have abated. While not significantly warmer than yesterday morning, it is considerably more comfortable because the wind has gone.
Laura brought two Sierra Nevada gourmet pizzas home from work last evening. We enjoyed them following Bible class at Harvest Christian Center. She brought a Mediterranean pizza (pesto sauce, artichoke hearts, red onion, olives, etc.) and a Brewery Employees' Favorite pizza (red sauce, four cheeses, mushrooms, several meats, etc.). They were delightful. Some of the leftover pizza followed Laura to work for lunch, and the balance followed me to my office and was enjoyed as breakfast this morning.

Born on this day in history: May 3, 1920 - Sugar Ray Robinson (1920 - 1989) boxer. He was noted for his boxing brains and brawn; welterweight champ, 1946-51 and five times middleweight champ, 1951-60.

Today is the National Day of Prayer! On this, the National Day of Prayer, I pray for the Body of Christ, for our President and all elected officials—federal, state, and local—all military and law enforcement personnel, all foreign leaders, and people of all nations.
There have been several national days of prayer in the U.S. before the day was made official in 1952. The Continental Congress issued a day of prayer in 1775 to designate "a time for prayer in forming a new nation." Thomas Jefferson argued, however, that although individual religious organizations had the right to designate a day of prayer, the U.S. government should not have that right.
On April 17, 1952, President Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law. It was in 1972 that the National Prayer Committee was formed. It went on to create the National Day of Prayer Task Force, with the intended purpose of coordinating events for the National Day of Prayer. In 1988, President Reagan signed a bill into law decreeing that the National Day of Prayer should be held on the first Thursday of May.
The intention of the National Day of Prayer was always that it would be a day when members of all faiths could pray together in their own way. It would involve Christians, Jews, Muslims, as well as Buddhists, Hindus, Aboriginals, Zoroastrians, and all others, of any faith or of no organized religion, who wished to participate.
