On this day in history: May 11, 1907 - A derailment outside Lompoc, California kills 32 Shriners, when their chartered train jumps off the tracks at a switch near Surf Depot.

Born on this day in history: May 11, 1893 - Martha Graham (1893 - 1991) Born in Allegheny (now Pittsburgh), PA, dancer and choreographer Martha Graham gave her first solo recital in 1926 in New York. From then on, Graham developed a radically new approach to dance that tapped feelings and psychology. By the 1950s, she was internationally recognized as the leading American choreographer of interpretive dancing. Demanding and autocratic, Graham inspired a devoted following.
