Squirrel Appreciation Day, In the News, and Enjoy

Squirrel Appreciation Day - Squirrel Appreciation Day is an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate tree-climbing, nut-gathering neighborhood squirrels. It is held in mid-winter when food sources are scarce for squirrels and other wildlife. Squirrels spent all fall gathering and "squirreling" away food. However, their supplies may be insufficient, and the variety of food is limited. Give them an extra special treat today to supplement their winter diets.

Not everyone likes squirrels. While they are fun to watch scampering about the yard and trees, they are aggressive at bird feeders. Squirrels tip almost any bird feeder and spill the seeds in search of the particular seeds they want.

In the fall, they attack pumpkins on front porches in search of the seeds inside. Gardeners abhor them, because they dig up and steal flower bulbs and may eat some of the vegetables in gardens.

Christy Hargrove from Asheville, North Carolina started Squirrel Appreciation Day on January 21, 2001. Christy is a wildlife rehabilitator in North Carolina, and is is affiliated with the Western North Carolina Nature Center.

Many approach squirrels from an altogether variant perspective: Hunters enjoy the exciting—and often challenging—sport of squirrel hunting.

Most hunters follow the precept, "Shoot to kill, and eat what you kill."

Perhaps there is no greater appreciation of squirrels to be shown than as an entrée at the dining table!

For dinner last night, we had grilled pork loin chops, yellow squash, white mushrooms, and Jalapeños. I made a tasty teriyaki sauce, using bottled teriyaki sauce, brown sugar, molasses, soy sauce, ground Cayenne pepper, and lime juice. Laura grilled the pork and vegetables perfectly. It was a delightful meal.

Bad Taste: Responding to pressure from Christian groups, the Miller Brewing Co. is asking organizers of a "gay" street celebration in San Francisco to remove its logo from a promotional poster portraying Jesus Christ and his disciples as "half-naked homosexual sadomasochists."

In a statement on its Web site, Miller said while it has "supported the Folsom Street Fair for several years, we take exception to the poster the organizing committee developed this year."

It is sadly coincidental that this is Samuel Adams' birthday. I can only imagine how disgusted he would be with the Miller Brewing Co.—a major player in an industry he was instrumental in creating!
