    Born on this Day in History: August 5, 1946 - Singer, songwriter Freddie Mercury, was born Farookh Bulsara in Zanzibar, Tanzania. He studied piano in boarding school in India and befriended numerous musicians at London's Ealing College of Art. The music of Mercury's band Queen reached the top of US and British charts. Mercury died of HIV on November 24, 1991.

    On this Day in History: August 5, 1836 - Sam Houston is elected as president of the Republic of Texas, which earned its independence from Mexico in a successful military rebellion.
