Dr. Charles Stanley, Just the Fax, and Enjoy

Dr. Charles Stanley - Charles Frazier Stanley (born September 25, 1932) is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church, a megachurch in northern Atlanta, Georgia. He is the founder and president of In Touch Ministries. Stanley also served two one-year terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1984 to 1986. Stanley has an evangelical, fundamentalist, dispensationalist theology.

Last evening, Laura and her friend, Donna, attended a book signing for Stanley's new book, Emotions: Confront the Lies. Conquer with Truth at the Family Christian Store in Sacramento, CA.

Here are some of the photographs Laura took at this event:

Just the Fax - Yesterday, as I relaxed and luxuriated in the tranquility that enveloped mine office—following a grueling day of IT, Web design, and photography—my reverie was unduly shattered by the entrance of a group of four females. They slithered into mine office sans appointment, and the apparent leader of the pack (as it were) stridently pronounced, "I need you to Fax this stuff right away." She held several sheets of paper in her right hand and fanned the air with them.

I grasped the remote control for my Roku unit and paused the episode of "I (Almost) Got Away with It" I had been watching on Netflix and replied, "I recall when faxing was done routinely, but that was many years ago." I created the similitude of a clock hand with my right arm and—while rotating it counter-clockwise—said, "Turning back the hands of time: Back, back, back. Fax (short for facsimile), sometimes called telecopying or telefax, is the telephonic transmission of scanned printed material (both text and images), normally to a telephone number connected to a printer or other output device."

The creature who had addressed me said nothing. I continued, "I have not personally been an active participant in the sending or receiving of a fax in many years. I have neither the capability nor the desire to engage in such an antiquated methodology of communication."

She stared at me, her jaw became set, her eyes became glazed and unblinking, and drool began to fall from her lower lip and puddle on her shoes.

"Well, you gotta send this 'cause it was s'posed to be done like yesterday or whatever."

I replied, "If you will excuse me, I must return to my viewing pleasure. Please exit the building now, and have a nice day." Her voice reached a feverish pitch—approximating the sound of a wounded ewe—and she said, "Just send the [expletive redacted] fax."

I said, "Go now." I pressed the Roku pause button, "I (Almost) Got Away with It" began, I grasped the remote control for my Onkyo home theatre receiver, and increased the volume sufficiently to make it impossible for her to speak and imagine that I would hear what she said.

The group departed, I lowered the volume, and enjoyed the balance of the episode.

Federal Government Shutdown and Enjoy

Federal Government Shutdown - How will the shutdown of the Federal Government affect me?

  • I have my costume chosen for this year's Halloween: I am going as the ghost of the Federal Government!

  • Remember: We must go to work today in order to help pay the salaries of Congressmen who do not go to work today!

  • Will this shutdown affect the taste of my nachos?

    Short answer: No.

Long answer: It should not. The government shutdown causes many nonessential federal employees to be placed on furlough, but it should not affect the way that cheese tastes when melted onto tortilla chips and dipped into salsa.

  • I like eating nachos outside. What does the shutdown mean for me?

    Short answer: Nothing.

Long answer: Eating nachos outside rocks. Sipping on a brew, taking a bite of some spicy nachos and then breathing that crisp, fall air—nothing better than that. Just do not expect to eat nachos in one of our National Parks, because they are closed because of the shutdown. Nothing enhances the majesty of Yosemite like a plate of nachos; but for now, it is just not happening.

  • I am waiting for a Federal loan to start a small business selling nachos. What's up?

Short answer: A lot is up.

Long answer: Your Federal small business loan will not be processed while this government shutdown is in effect.

Food, In the News, and Enjoy

Food - Apparently, there shall be no stopping Laura! She determined that she thoroughly enjoys creating highly edible and particularly tasty items for our dining pleasure!

Friday evening, she created yet another of her wonderful pizzas.

She also produced a quantity of stellar Habanero Ginger Jelly. She filled six eight-ounce canning jars with this wonderful nectar. It is hot and sweet and absolutely wonderful.

Laura got the recipe for this delightful condiment here:

    Simply So Good

Laura and I highly recommend this site. It offers many wonderful recipes.

Laura snatched a large London Broil from the butcher at the supermarket near our home. She placed it in the freezer. When it had frozen sufficiently to facilitate slicing it, I removed it from the freezer and sliced it with our Chef's Choice meat slicer.

Laura covered it with an excellent marinade she created and placed it in the refrigerator. She turned the meat every two hours to ensure it marinated evenly. The marinade contained a quantity of ground black pepper, red pepper flakes, Pappy's seasoning, granulated garlic, teriyaki sauce, brown sugar, and lime juice.

Last evening, Laura removed the meat from the marinade, placed it on trays, and processed it with our nine-tray Excalibur dehydrator.

After several hours, the jerky was ready to be removed from the dehydrator and stored.

A thorough tasting of the jerky was requisite, of course, prior to packaging it for storage!

Two thick New York strip steaks currently reside in our refrigerator—delighting in the marinade Laura used on the jerky. These steaks shall be tossed upon the grill this evening, and I am drooling copiously in anticipation of devouring them!

Ah. Laura just sent me this photograph of delicacies given her by a co-worker. YUM! I eagerly await her use of these items in future meals!
