Vanished, In the News, and Enjoy

Vanished - Yesterday morning, a client came to mine office and said, "I see your neighbors are gone." I replied, "Of what neighbors are you speaking?" The client replied by pointing in the direction of the building to the left of mine office.

I said, "Really?" and investigated. Friday, the building had been filled with apparel. The building was now completely empty, and there was a sign announcing, "For Rent."

I was astounded. Apparently, the building must have been vacated on Saturday and Sunday. It had been there only a few months. I shall watch with great interest to see what next occupies this building.

The building still bears the marquee of the prior business, Coffee Club Bistro. Mine office is situated between that building and H&R Block.

National Tempura Day, In the News, and Enjoy

National Tempura Day - Today is National Tempura Day!

Tempura is a delicious deep fried Japanese dish made with lightly battered vegetables and seafood.

The original cooking technique is actually attributed to the Portuguese, who landed in Japan in the sixteenth century to establish new trade routes.

The word "tempura" is also related to the European roots of the dish. It comes from the Latin phrase "quattuor tempora" meaning "Ember Days." This term refers to the days when fish or vegetables were eaten instead of meat.

Tempura batter is made with cold water and wheat flour. Some recipes also call for eggs, baking soda, oil, or spices for extra flavoring. A traditional tempura will usually include shrimp, scallops, eggplant, green beans, sweet potato, mushrooms, or bamboo.

All Things Are Relative, In the News, and Enjoy

All Things Are Relative - All things are relative.
Whilst I bemoaned the cold 36° morning and saw the forecast for a brisk 67° afternoon,

I received an email from my dear friend, Chris. His email quickly made my grumbling seem inane indeed.

    His message contained this bulletin:
    * THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GRAND RAPIDS HAS ISSUED A WIND CHILL WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM MONDAY TO 7 PM EST TUESDAY. THE WIND CHILL WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. HAZARDOUS WEATHER...
    * SNOW WILL CONTINUE TODAY AND WILL INCREASE IN INTENSITY THIS AFTERNOON. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 10 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BY THIS EVENING.
    * WIND GUSTS OF 25 TO 35 MPH LATE TONIGHT AND MONDAY COULD CREATE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.
    * WIND CHILLS WILL DROP TO BETWEEN 20 AND 30 BELOW DURING THE DAY ON MONDAY.
I felt truly ashamed for the self-pity I had been feeling and vowed to accept the weather as I find it. It is now 42° at 8:30 AM. I shall endure!

Happy Mew Year For Cats Day, Fajitas, In the News, and Enjoy

Happy Mew Year For Cats Day - Felines, ever above mere humans in the great chain of being, have a day unto themselves to celebrate the “mewness” of a new time.

Here are our cats, Zeus and Thor!

Fajitas - We enjoyed festive dining: Laura drove through In-N-Out Burger on her way home Tuesday and surprised me with a bag of burgers!

We enjoyed two of the burgers for lunch Tuesday. The remaining two burgers were devoured for brunch on Wednesday.

New Year's Eve, we enjoyed a beautiful grilled tri-tip and an excellent kale dish. Laura dry-rubbed the tri-tip, and I grilled it in our Calphalon grill pan. Laura used a recipe from Bobby Flay to prepare the kale. It was an excellent meal. Left-over tri-tip shall star in this evening's meal—a spinach salad. I shall slice the tri-tip very thinly and toss it with baby spinach, chopped hard-boiled eggs, chopped green onions, sliced white mushrooms, and sliced baby peppers. It shall be served with a dressing prepared from extra-virgin olive oil and rice wine vinegar.

    Last evening, we enjoyed fajitas.

While Laura sliced a quantity of carne asada into strips and seasoned it, I sliced fresh garlic, white onion, Jalapeños, and baby mixed peppers. I sautéed the ingredients in a large sauté pan. Laura heated some tortillas. At the table, we assembled excellent fajitas, topped with fresh salsa, and ate with wild abandon!
