National Onion Rings Day - Today is National Onion Rings Day!

Onion rings are a snack food, fast food, side dish, or appetizer made from circles of sliced onion, coated in a batter or breading, and fried.

They are most well known in Western countries and a few Asian countries, where they are often served as part of fast food meals and sometimes restaurant meals.

It is not known who originally created onion rings or when. It is known that in 1933 a recipe for onion rings appeared in a Crisco shortening advertisement in The New York Times.

Peanuts are one of the star ingredients in a Snickers bar and each bar contains about 16 peanuts.

About 100 tons of peanuts go into making the 15 million Snickers bars that are produced by Mars, Inc. every day.

German Chocolate Cake Day - Today is German Chocolate Cake Day!

German chocolate cake, originally German's chocolate cake, is a layered chocolate cake from the United States filled and topped with a coconut-pecan frosting.

It owes its name to an American chocolate maker named Sam German, who developed a formulation of dark baking chocolate that came to be used in the cake recipe.

Sweet baking chocolate is traditionally used for the chocolate flavor in the actual cake, but few recipes call for it today. The filling and/or topping is a caramel made with egg yolks and evaporated milk; once the caramel is cooked, coconut and pecans are stirred in.

Occasionally, a chocolate frosting is spread on the sides of the cake and piped around the circumference of the layers to hold in the filling. Maraschino cherries are occasionally added as a garnish.

Contrary to popular belief, German chocolate cake did not originate in Germany. Its roots can be traced back to 1852 when American Sam German developed a type of dark baking chocolate for the American Baker's Chocolate Company. The brand name of the product, Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate, was named in honor of him.

National Iced Tea Day - Today is National Iced Tea Day!

With the official start of summer just a few days away, the timing is perfect for National Iced Tea Day.

Chances are, it is already hot in your area. Today may serve as a good reminder to make and enjoy your first (of many) Iced Tea drink of the season. Have it plain, add a little lemon, or sweeten it with sugar. Iced Tea is certainly a favorite summer cooler of millions of Americans. And best of all, tea is good for your health!

In 1904, English tea plantation owner Richard Blechynden set up a booth to sell hot tea at the St. Louis World Fair.

It was a sizzler of a day, and fair visitors did not want anything hot. Rather, they needed something to quench their thirst—something cold. Blechynden dumped some of his hot tea into ice and served it cold. It was an immediate hit. This was the first known use of iced tea.
