National Cheeseburger Day, In the News, and Enjoy!

National Cheeseburger Day - Fire up the grill or head to your favorite restaurant because today is National Cheeseburger Day!

There are several theories about the origins of the cheeseburger. One story claims that the cheeseburger was created between 1924 and 1926 by a chef named Lionel Sternberger. As the story goes, a homeless man dining at Sternberger's restaurant in Pasadena, California, suggested the addition of a slice of cheese to his hamburger order. Sternberger complied, eventually added it to his menu, and the rest is history.

Today, cheeseburgers are a staple at restaurants and backyard celebrations all across the country. Hungry yet? Enjoy a delicious cheeseburger in honor of National Cheeseburger Day!

Skyscraper Day, Teriyaki Mushroom Burgers, Asian Chicken Salad, and Relax!

Skyscraper Day - Skyscraper Day is a day to appreciate and admire the world's tallest skyscrapers.

Skyscrapers are truly engineering and architectural marvels. In many crowded cities, space is in short supply, and real estate prices are ever increasing. Building "up" becomes more and more logical. As technical capabilities in construction improved, skyscrapers have become taller and taller. In addition, there is a certain prestige to have one of the tallest structures in the world in your city.

Here are the world's tallest buildings:

Teriyaki Mushroom Burgers - Laura produced some incredibly tasty teriyaki mushroom burgers Sunday afternoon. She made patties using 85% lean beef, to which she added minced garlic, minced Jalapeños, and several spices and seasonings.

While the patties grilled, Laura sautéed sliced, poached mushrooms in teriyaki sauce. She poured the mushrooms atop the patties and placed Swiss cheese atop them.

She also produced an excellent batch of oven fries.

She placed the patties atop fresh Kaiser rolls from a local deli. There was no need to add condiments! The burgers were incredible.

Asian Chicken Salad - Yesterday was Labor Day. While many traveled great distances and placed themselves in peril on crowded roadways, Laura and I stayed home and produced an enormous quantity of Asian Chicken Salad. Laura poached sliced mushrooms and prepared the noodles. I did the slicing, dicing, chopping, and mincing. Laura combined the ingredients, added seasonings, extra-virgin olive oil and Oriental rice wine vinegar, and slowly stirred everything together.

This is a recipe I developed many years ago and with which I have brought intense pleasure to a great many.

Laura took a quantity to work with her this morning. She is gifting it to a co-worker. This afternoon, when she arrives at our home, she will travel to the home of a member of our home church (Harvest Christian Center) who is recovering from an injury at home. Laura will bless her with an offering of this delicious treat.

The balance shall be savored by us throughout the week. Asian Chicken Salad is excellent as an entrée or as a side dish. It is extremely healthful and very low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol. It is also very time- and labor-intensive to produce. If you wish to make some, you will find the recipe on this blog under the Recipes link on the left.

    In-N-Out Burger and Be Entertained!

In-N-Out Burger - Laura sent me an email yesterday that contained a recipe. She said she thought it sounded very good and wished to make it. I replied, "I can has cheezburger?" Laura quickly replied, "Yes." I had no idea what she meant. Shortly thereafter, she emailed photographs of her visit to In-N-Out Burger. I salivated copiously throughout the day whilst awaiting her arrival at our home. She was carrying precious cargo!

The burger was absolutely delicious. There is nothing in the burger world that can compare. The burger she brought me was an Animal-Style Burger. I devoured it ravenously and thanked her profusely.

When In-N-Out Burger first opened in 1948, the company only provided a basic menu of burgers, fries, and beverages. The foods it prepared were made on-site from fresh ingredients, including its French fries, which were sliced and cooked to order. Unlike other major competitors in the hamburger fast food restaurant business (Burger King, McDonald's and Wendy's), as the chain expanded over the years, it has not added products such as chicken or salads to its menu or changed its preparation methods.

All burgers consist of one or more 1/8 lb beef patties cooked to "medium-well" and served on a toasted bun. The standard style of burger includes tomato, hand-leafed lettuce, and "spread," a sauce similar to Thousand Island dressing. In addition, customers are asked if they wish to add raw or grilled onions.

Instead of a broad menu like other competitors, In-N-Out has become known for its Secret Menu, unadvertised variations of its burgers that are based on customer preferences, such as the popular "Animal Style." Here is In-N-Out's Secret Menu

    The Perfect Burger

The Perfect Burger - Laura is visiting family members in Tucson, Arizona. The kitties, Zeus and Thor, and I are bonding. I gave them an extra portion of kitty treats. They began devouring the kitty treats with great fervor. The sight made me realize it was time for me to dine. I had the butcher at the local market grind a filet mignon. From this, I produced The Perfect Burger.

I poached and minced a dozen garlic cloves, a medium Jalapeño, and a small habanero. I added Pappy’s seasoning, ground black pepper, granulated garlic, and ground basil.

I grilled this on a Caphalon grilling pan. I smeared Sierra Nevada Stout mustard on a toasted sourdough bun and placed sliced tomato and sliced red onion to the bun, sprinkled the tomato with red pepper flakes and ground black pepper, placed pepperjack cheese atop the burger patty and placed it on the bun when the cheese had melted. I turned the fries to broil for the last two minutes, prepared a dip with catsup, mayonnaise, Jalapeño relish, and Crystal Extra-Hot Louisiana Sauce.

It was indeed The Perfect Burger.

I am certain we have all joked about "taking a road trip" using Google Maps' Street View. I tried and soon tired of the amount of work and time involved in creating such a road trip. The team at T+L Labs put in all the work for you and created this amazing, mesmerizing road trip video using street view. It careens down roads at warp speed, often panning the view as if you are in the backseat looking out the window. This is an amazing journey! Get comfortable and ride!
