On this day in history: May 5, 1862 - Cinco de Mayo is a date of great importance for the Mexican and Chicano communities. It marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla. In 1862, the French army began its advance. Under General Ignacio Zaragoza, 5,000 ill-equipped Mestizo and Zapotec Indians defeated the French army in what came to be known as the "Batalla de Puebla" on the fifth of May.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! I generally have a deli ham or deli turkey sandwich for breakfast each weekday morning. This usually consists of two slices of Oroweat Health Nut Bread, two slices of Oscar Meyer Thick Slice smoked ham, a slice of Kraft 2% Pepperjack cheese, and a few squirts of Gulden's Spicy Brown Mustard. This morning, a added a large Jalapeñ—sliced and layered between the cheese and ham. It was delicious. I might make this my usual weekday morning fare!

The K9 Unit

It was the end of the day when the officer parked his police van in front of the station.

As he gathered his equipment, his K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and the officer saw a little boy staring in at him.

"Is that a dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," the officer replied.

Puzzled, the boy looked at the officer and then towards the back of the van.

Finally he said, "What'd he do?"

Heat Wave: We are experiencing a heat wave. Weather forecasters say this heat wave will end today, and temperatures will drop by more than 20°! This will be a short-lived respite from the heat, however, since scorching, triple-digit temperatures will soon be the order of the day.

The weather was excellent throughout the weekend. It was very warm (high 80s) and sunny, and there was a gentle breeze. The birds sang with great abandon and obvious mirth.
Saturday morning, I made a marinade with teriyaki sauce, garlic powder, lime juice, brown sugar, molasses, and ground Cayenne pepper. I placed two thick top sirloin steaks, whole white mushrooms, sliced squash, and sliced red onion in a large, zip-seal bag, covered with the marinade, sealed, and placed in the refrigerator. Throughout the day, Laura turned the bag—ensuring that all was marinated well. Click images to enlarge.

Sunday evening, I grilled Tyson boneless, skinless chicken breasts that had marinated all day in Jack Daniels barbecue sauce, garlic powder, ground black pepper, and Crystal hot sauce. I made corn and diced red bell pepper and garlic mashed red potatoes for side dishes. Click images to enlarge.

Sunday evening, after dinner, we watch "The Case for Christ." [In this thought-provoking program, Lee Strobel—a former legal editor for the Chicago Tribune and a self-described atheist who became a Christian—shares the details of his spiritual quest and asks tough questions of a wide range of experts. Is the New Testament a reliable source? Did Jesus Christ in fact exist? Was he really the Son of God? And could Christ's resurrection have actually occurred?] I highly recommend this movie.

Last Evening's Dinner: For dinner last evening, I made Sautéed Chicken Livers with Green Onions over Rice. I washed and dried a container of Foster Farms chicken livers. I seasoned a container of Mexican bread crumbs with adobo seasoning, granulated garlic, and a blend of ground chile de arbol and ground Cayenne. I poured the seasoned bread crumbs into a large Glad container, added the chicken livers, placed the lid on the container, and shook to thoroughly coat the chicken livers. I prepared a cup (dry) of Jasmine rice in the electric rice cooker. I sautéed the chicken livers in extra-virgin olive oil. When the chicken livers were fully cooked, I tossed chopped green onions over them, turned off the burner, and allowed the livers and onions to rest for two minutes. Laura spread the cooked rice on a serving platter. She placed the chicken livers and onions atop the rice and drizzled the olive oil remaining in the sauté pan over this. It was a very delicious meal.

I want a greenhouse! The photograph of the greenhouse my brother constructed, and the photographs he sent of pepper plant beginning to blossom, caused me to daydream of a greenhouse. The Weather: Weather forecasts have been in a continuous state of flux lately. It is difficult to place any credibility on weather reports. It is more realistic to simply look out the window and propose—based upon what one sees outside that window—what the weather shall be for the balance of the day. This methodology was not particularly successful this morning, however: When I looked through the window of our home and viewed the sidewalk outside, I made the forecast that today would be dry. The sidewalk was dry, and it did not appear that it had rained recently. 30 minutes later, however, I peered at the live feed from my Web cam on my desktop and saw that the rain was descending amain! The wind that howled all night has not abated. It is a fierce wind that accompanies the rain. My new forecast is for a truly hideous, wet, windy, dark, dismal day! Nonetheless, I shall rejoice in the day, since it is the day the Lord has made for us!

When I first viewed the video my friend from afar, Chris, sent me, I was unable to contain my delight and chortled in such a loud and effusive manner that employees from neighboring businesses rushed to my office to check on my welfare. The video so amused me that I felt compelled to share it here as the Video of the Day.

I had a peculiar dream last night: I dreamed that a woman came to my office and inquired about engaging me to photograph her "...daughter and friends." I asked if this were a birthday party, and she replied, "No. They're practicing for a musical presentation at their school." We agreed upon the fee and a date and time. She gave me a deposit and departed. At the appointed date and time, I met the woman at a local park. She had over a dozen children with her. They appeared to be approximately 12 years of age. The children began performing, and I began photographing them. They danced and sang—performing the musical, "Oklahoma!" Their performances were stunning. I was amazed by their dancing and singing talents. Without benefit of music, they sang perfectly and danced flawlessly. When the shoot was completed, I said to the woman, "I am amazed by the incredible talent of these children." She said, "Well, they're just a bunch of kids playing around." I did not understand her attitude. When I arrived at my office and viewed the images on my computer, the costumes the children had worn were not displayed! Their attire was ordinary daily wear. Gone, also, was the performing grace and skill they had exhibited! Their poses were ungainly and child-like. I awakened.

For dinner last evening, I made chicken enchiladas. I made enchilada sauce by adding Gebhardt's chili powder, ground Chile d'Arbol, ground Cayenne, and granulated garlic to tomato sauce. I shredded two large, grilled chicken breasts. I poured some of the sauce over the shredded chicken in a stainless-steel bowl and tossed to cover. I placed a quantity of chicken in flour tortillas, rolled tightly, and placed in a Pyrex baking dish that I first coated with sauce. I topped the enchiladas with the remaining sauce—smoothing it evenly over, and fully coating, the exposed portions of the enchiladas. I sliced extra-sharp cheddar cheese and covered the enchiladas with the cheese slices. I baked the dish in the microwave oven until the cheese was melted and bubbling. We had salsa which I made Saturday morning for a condiment. It was incredibly delicious. Leftovers shall follow Laura to Chico this morning.

May Madness—the annual Corning Car Show— was held last weekend. It was a great success. Soon, I shall have a slide show created from selected photographs I took of the event. I shall publish the URL here when it is ready for viewing.

Saturday, we watched "Into the Blue" in HD on the USA Network. [A group of divers discovers a dangerous deep-sea treasure in this thriller starring Paul Walker, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Ashley Scott and Tyson Beckford. While diving in the deep blue waters off the Bahamas, the team finds a sunken plane with an illegal cargo worth millions. But ruthless drug kingpins are also after the plane's illicit booty, and the divers wind up in hot water as they quickly go from the hunters to the hunted.] We were very pleasantly surprised. Neither of us expected the movie to be as well-acted and entertaining as it was. It was actually highly entertaining and well-acted. I recommend it. The photography (particularly in HD) was awesome.

Later that day, we watched "The World's Fastest Indian" on Blu-ray Disc. [Based on a true story, this drama follows 67-year-old grandfather and New Zealander Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins) as he flies across Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats and blazes into the record books at 183.586 mph on his customized Indian Scout motorcycle. Set in 1967.] This movie was absolutely wonderful and heartwarming. Anthony Hopkins' acting was (as always) flawless, and the story was fascinating. I highly recommend this movie.

For dinner Sunday, we had linguine with giant shrimp. I marinated giant shrimp in extra-virgin olive oil, minced garlic, Tony Chachere's More Spice, and rice wine vinegar. I cooked a package of Barilla linguine until al denté, drained, and set aside. Laura sautéed the shrimp in the marinade. When the shrimp were cooked, she incorporated the linguine, added more extra-virgin olive oil and Tony Chachere's More Spice, stirred, and took the dish to the table. At the table, we added DiGiorno shredded Parmesan cheese and crushed red peppers. A bottle of Robert Mondavi 2004 Private Reserve Chardonnay accompanied the meal. It was wonderful. Leftovers followed Laura to Chico this morning, to be enjoyed for lunch.

The wind continues! The wind that has been plaguing us for over a week now continues today. It is forecast to be in the 80s today, so at least the wind should not be cold. Yesterday, it was cold!

Last night—while preparing to leave for Bible class at Harvest Christian Center, we watched Dick Cheney's speech at the Annual Radio and TV Correspondents Dinner. He explained "global warming," saying he observed that it was, in fact, getting warmer. He said he had no doubt that we are "...in the midst of a global warming—or, as I prefer to call it, spring!"

The Oyster Man
In the days of John Wesley, lay preachers with limited education would sometimes conduct the church services. One man used Luke 19:21 as his text: "Lord, I feared Thee, because Thou art an austere man" (KJV). Not knowing the word "austere," he thought the text spoke of "an oyster man."

He explained how a diver must grope in the dark, freezing water to retrieve oysters. In his attempt, he cuts his hands on the sharp edges of the shells. After he obtains an oyster, he rises to the surface, clutching it "in his torn and bleeding hands." The preacher added, "Christ descended from the glory of heaven into...sinful human society, in order to retrieve humans and bring them back up with Him to the glory of heaven. His torn and bleeding hands are a sign of the value He has placed on the object of His quest."

Afterward, 12 men received Christ. Later that night, someone came to Wesley to complain about unschooled preachers who were too ignorant even to know the meaning of the texts they were preaching on. The Oxford-educated Wesley simply said, "Never mind. The Lord got a dozen oysters tonight."

Warm weather! It is forecast to be 83 degrees today, 85 degrees tomorrow, and 87 degrees on Sunday. This is wonderful, of course. Unfortunately, the wind is fierce. Hopefully, the wind will soon abate, so that we may fully enjoy this excellent weather. I departed for my office this morning in shorts, sandals, and island shirt, sans jacket. Despite the loathsome wind, it was sufficiently warm at 6:30 AM that no jacket was needed.
8:36 AM Update: The forecasts have been updated. Today is forecast to be 85 degrees, tomorrow is forecast to be 87 degrees, and Sunday is forecast to be 88 degrees!

Introducing the world's smallest gun that fires deadly 300mph bullets - but is just TWO inches long

Meet the pistol that fits in your pocket - and packs a hell of a punch.

The SwissMiniGun is the size of a key fob but fires tiny 270mph bullets powerful enough to kill at close range.

Officially the world's smallest working revolver, the gun is being marketed as a collector's item and measures just 2.16 inches long (5.5cm). It can fire real 4.53 bullets up to a range of 367ft (112m).

The stainless steel gun costs £3,000 although the manufacturers also produce extravagant, made-to-order versions made out of 18-carat gold with customised diamond studs which sell for up to £30,000.

At just over two inches long it is the world's smallest gun - but the 300mph bullets it fires mean it is still deadly.

It cannot be imported into the UK, and buyers in Switzerland and Europe must produce an import permit from police to obtain one.

The gun is banned from being imported into the US - because it's barrel is less than three inches, meaning it is deemed too small to qualify for sporting purposes.

Jonathan Spencer, consultant forensic scientist and firearms expert, said that although the gun, which fires bullets at a speed of 399 feet a second, was tiny, it could still prove fatal and in the eyes of the law was as dangerous as a machine gun.

He said: "The general threshold for perforating the skin is about 330 feet a second.

"Apart from bone, skin offers the greatest resistance to penetration. If it can pass through the skin it is potentially lethal, even if the bullets are small.

"If you shoved something 3mm across into someone's chest you could kill them. It's the same with these bullets, they could penetrate the heart.

"It is capable of killing someone. Under section 5 of the Firearms Act it would be a prohibited weapon. It would be on the same scale as a machine gun."

The gun shoots 2.34 mm calibre rim fire ammunition especially developed for it as the smallest rim fire ammunition in the world.

The Swiss Minigun, which is being marketed as a collector's item, is just 5.5cm long, and fires 4.53mm bullets up to 112 metres.

It weighs in at just 0.7oz (19.8grams) and fires live and blank ammunition.

The gun is the first product of the SwissMiniGun company, a gunsmiths based at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

Owner Paul Erard said that since the product's launch three years ago, the firm had sold around 300 of the guns, mainly to collectors in the Middle and Far East.

He said: "We are producing in very small quantities - perhaps 25 gold guns and 100 steel guns a year, and there is a six month waiting list to get one.

"We will make whatever the customer wishes for. The most expensive version we have sold cost £30,000 and was covered in diamonds and came with a gold chain."

Other bespoke finishes available include ebony grips, hand engraved grips, gold grips with diamonds or collared precious stones.

Mr Erard said that although the double action revolver is similar in appearance to a Colt Python full-size weapon, it was actually based on a Swiss-made revolver.

In September 2006 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives(ATF) in New York issued a warning about the gun after being alerted by a police officer who spotted it on a website.

Special Agent William McMahon said the gun was so small it could pass for a key fob, and warned it made the perfect stealth weapon for serious criminals.

But Mr Erard denied the gun was deadly and said it was only a tenth as powerful as some air guns.

"Since September 11 there has been a lot of paranoia in America", he said.

"It is ridiculous. Why would criminals want my gun when you can go out and buy a Kalashnikov there already?"

A Guinness World Records spokesman confirmed the gun held the record as the word's smallest working revolver.
