The New Grill

The new grill was scheduled to arrive yesterday. It did not. The tracking information on the shipper's Web site says it will be delivered yesterday. That is not encouraging. I yearn for the sight of flesh charring on the new grill!

Update: 3:25 PM

I "listened to elevator music" (as Cindy suggested) sufficiently long enough to finally reach a live person. He researched the shipment of the grill and reported that it arrived in Red Bluff (about 20 miles north of here) early yesterday morning. He said it is expected to be delivered Thursday morning! That certainly makes the shipping company's name, Nonstop Delivery, a gross misnomer, I would suggest.

The new grill!
When I ordered the Weber S-620 grill online from Home Depot, it showed that the unit was in stock. I added a cover and placed my order. This was early in the afternoon yesterday. When I arrived at my home, I was concerned that I had not received an order confirmation or an order number.

I logged onto my account at Home Depot online to check the status of my order, and the system indicated that I had no order in the system!

I called the customer service department on my iPhone and was promptly placed on hold. While I waited, I brought up the product page, and there was a notice that stated the grill was out of stock.

When a live representative answered my call, I explained the situation. She said that she found my order and that it was being processed. She said that if the grill showed availability when I ordered, it was likely that I ordered the ONLY Weber S-620 in stock in the Home Depot system! She said that was how it appeared and that I should receive my order in 5-7 business days. She gave me an order confirmation number.

Now, the waiting begins!

The Biker
A Harley rider is passing the zoo when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back, letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A New York Times reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter says, "Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life." The biker replies, "Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right."

The reporter says, "Well, I'm a journalist from the New York Times, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page... so, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?"

The biker replies, "I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican."

The following morning the biker buys The New York Times to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on front page:

When I departed my house this morning at 7 AM, the sky was blue and clear, and the sun was shining brightly. Now—45 minutes later—it appears that the weatherpeople correctly forecast today's weather: The sun is hiding behind very dark, threatening clouds, and the temperature is dropping quickly. Rain is predicted for today, and it now appears this prediction will materialize.

Imagine my surprise when I encountered this scene while photographing valuable antiques for a client.

It is good there is very little wind today! It is cold! If the wind were howling—as it often does—the chill factor would be cryogenic, certainly! The exterior temperature display in Mr. Nitro showed the outside temperature to be a mere 34° at 7 AM this morning, as I drove to my office! Apparently, it was colder yet earlier, since a patina of rime glittered upon Mr. Nitro's hood! The sun is shining brightly, so (unless the wind increases significantly) it should soon be warm.

Sometimes, my business day is routine and without event. Sometimes, it is fast-paced and exciting. Sometimes, it is frighteningly bizarre. For example, yesterday: A male and a female entered my office just after 11 AM. This exchange took place:

Male: You sell the Internet?
Me: If you are questioning whether I offer Internet access, yes, I do. Good morning. Please be seated.
[The female sits. The male continues standing.]
Male: How much?
Me: We offer dial-up at $15 per month, with a $15 one-time sign-up fee. We also offer DSL.
Female: We just want whatever's the cheapest.
Me: That would be dial-up. We offer dial-up at $15 per month, with a $15 one-time sign-up fee.
Male: Is there any charge to get it started?
Me: There is a $15 one-time sign-up fee.
Female: What all does that include?
Me: It includes a $15 one-time sign-up fee to cover sign-up. It is a one-time charge in the amount of $15.
Male: [Looks inquisitively at female.] Well, what do you think?
Female: [Looking at male.] Okay.
Me: Great. I will print an invoice for the sign-up fee. You will be billed quarterly for the monthly fee.
Male: What does that mean?
Me: To what are you referring?
Female: I think he means what does billed quarterly mean? When do you send a bill is what he means I think. Right, honey?
Male: Yeah.
Me: As the phrase might suggest, "billed quarterly" means that the $15 monthly fee for Internet access if billed four times a year. Each billing would represent a three-month period.
Male: Okay, now I'm getting confused here. What's it going to cost to get us hooked up today?
Me: In order to begin service, you must pay the $15 one-time set-up fee. You will then be billed quarterly for the $15 monthly fee.
Male: [Turns to female.] What do you think?
Female: Okay.
Me: Great. I will print an invoice for the sign-up fee.
Male: Now let me get something straight first. We don't have no credit card.
Me: That is not an issue. No credit card is required. You may pay the quarterly billing with personal check or money order.
Female: Can't we just give you the money every month?
Me: The billing is quarterly, and payment must be made to the Internet service provider.
Female: [Looks at male.] What do you think?
Male: Okay.
[At this point, the printer spews forth an invoice for the sign-up fee. I hand the invoice to the female.]
Female: What do I do? Do we got to fill this out?
Me: There is nothing requiring your input. It is simply an invoice for the sign-up fee.
Female: What do I do with this then?
Me: You may do with it whatever you wish.
Male: So we're all done then? That's all there is to it?
Me: You must pay the $15 one-time sign-up fee. Then, you may depart and install this software [I hold up a CD containing the Internet access software.]. It will take only a few minutes to install, and you will be able then to enjoy all the Internet has to offer.
Female: Okay. [She grasps at the CD.]
Me: There is the matter of the $15 one-time sign-up fee.
Female: That's okay. When do we got to pay that?
Me: [I am a very patient person, but it is quickly becoming unduly burdensome to continue patiently.] Now.
Male: We don't have that much money right this minute.
Me: That is no problem. [I grasp the invoice from the female's hand.] When you have secured the funds, simply return. [I turn to Outlook 2007, which I have neglected completely during this discourse. I begin replying to a client's email message.]
Female: But we got to have Internet now. We're expecting some email.
Me: And just what do you imagine this email holds in store for you? Possibly even more exciting than the very nature of the email would be the answer to the question of how this email was sent to you, since you do not as yet have an email address.
[The couple exchanged glances and muttered to one another. I continued the reply to my client. When I had completed and sent the reply to my client, I looked to the places previously occupied by the couple and saw that they had gone.]

When I arrived home yesterday afternoon at 4 PM, I put away the goods I had purchased at the market and perched in my recliner with my laptop and sent Laura an email. I told her the weather report was predicting a rain storm that night and that she should park in the front of our house to avoid the dismal walkway that would result from such a rain. She parked in the carport at the rear of our house. It is good that she did! It was damp last night, yet there was no rain. It was, however, sufficiently cold that all was covered with a chitinous carapace of rime! Mr. Nitro was fully encased in ice. By parking in the carport, Laura's Yaris was saved this cryogenic fate.

For dinner last evening, we had a salad (green leaf lettuce, celery, green onions, mushrooms, and cluster tomatoes), toasted garlic bread, and trout fillets. The trout was the star of the meal. It was given us by friend and reader, Frank. I sautéed it lightly in extra-virgin olive oil, seasoned with lemon pepper and dill weed. He caught the trout—as witnessed by the photograph below! For dinner last evening, I made an Ahi salad. I filled a large stainless-steel bowl with spring mix assorted greens and topped with sliced red bell pepper, sliced white mushrooms, sliced cucumber, and sliced tomatoes. I pan-seared a large Ahi fillet until it was lightly charred on both sides and beautifully rare in the center. When the Ahi had cooled, I sliced it thinly and arranged the slices atop the salad. I made a dressing of extra-virgin olive oil, rice wine vinegar, lemon pepper, ground black pepper, celery salt, ground ginger, granulated garlic, and lime juice. It was a delightful meal.

Saturday morning, while Laura was at the salon, I produced two marinades. I made a marinade of extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, Tony Chachere's More Spice, ground black pepper, and honey. I placed two huge New York strip steaks in a Glad bag, poured the marinade over them, and placed in the refrigerator. I made a marinade of extra-virgin olive oil, rice wine vinegar, ground ginger, minced garlic, and Tony Chachere's More Spice. I placed Tyson boneless, skinless chicken breasts in a Glad bag and poured 2/3 of the marinade over them. I placed giant prawns in another Glad bag and poured the remaining marinade over them.

Saturday evening, I grilled the New York strip steaks and prawns and steamed some sugar snap peas. The steaks were perfect: Charred on the outside, and rare in the center. The giant prawns were delightful. I removed the tails prior to placing in the marinade. The butcher had slit the backs deveined them. The meat popped out of the shells easily. They were succulent beyond description.

Sunday morning—following the early service at Harvest Christian Center, Laura cooked OreIda potatoes O'Brien, fried eggs, and two lovely pieces of leftover New York strip steaks. It was a wonderful brunch.

Sunday evening, Laura grilled the chicken breasts, red bell peppers, yellow squash, and potatoes. The chicken was moist, tender, and delicious. The vegetables were wonderful. A quantity of chicken remains for another meal later in the week.

When I returned home from the office yesterday, I produced an enormous batch of salsa, using 12 large cluster tomatoes, 4 huge Jalapeños, two large habaneros, a large white onion, three stalks of celery, a large quantity of minced garlic, Tony Chachere's More Spice, cumin, ground black pepper, sea salt, and parsley. For dinner, Laura cooked New York-style pork sausage (cut into 1/2-inch pieces), Eggland's Best large eggs, leftover potatoes O'Brien, Tony Chachere's More Spice, sea salt, and ground black pepper. She warmed flour tortillas, and we made burritos—liberally adding fresh salsa. It was a delicious meal.

Cool(er) Weather! The last several days have been progressively cooler. Yesterday, it was nearly 1 PM before I determined it necessary to activate the air conditioning! It is forecast to be a mere 92 degrees today. Global cooling has begun!

Sarah Palin is Commander of the Alaska National Guard. Consider this:

Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system.

The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It is on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units. As governor of Alaska, Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counter-terrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden's and certainly by far exceeds Obama's. She's also the Commander in Chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF ), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security's counter-terrorism plans. Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country's defense. Given Alaska's proximity to Russia, she may have security clearances we do not even know about. According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets.

The wind has abated! The wind that has plagued us for the last several days appears to have abated. While not significantly warmer than yesterday morning, it is considerably more comfortable because the wind has gone.

Laura brought two Sierra Nevada gourmet pizzas home from work last evening. We enjoyed them following Bible class at Harvest Christian Center. She brought a Mediterranean pizza (pesto sauce, artichoke hearts, red onion, olives, etc.) and a Brewery Employees' Favorite pizza (red sauce, four cheeses, mushrooms, several meats, etc.). They were delightful. Some of the leftover pizza followed Laura to work for lunch, and the balance followed me to my office and was enjoyed as breakfast this morning.

The blog is late this morning! We had an issue with an electrical outlet in our kitchen, and I met with an electrician this morning at 7:30 AM. He quickly corrected the problem, and all is now well. This delayed the blog, however. For those who eagerly await it each weekday morning, I apologize.

We watched "Cars" in Blu-ray on our new home theatre equipment. This is easily the best movie with which to demonstrate the awesomeness of Blu-ray. We had seen the movie previously and enjoyed it a good deal, but viewing it in Blu-ray was an incredibly more exciting experience.

One of my brothers came to dinner on Saturday. We had grilled pork tenderloins and potato salad. I made the potato salad Friday afternoon, using baby red potatoes, celery, red bell pepper, red onion, white onion, peas, hard-boiled eggs, and dill pickles. For the dressing, I mixed mayonnaise, lime juice, Dijon mustard, wasabi paste, ground black pepper, Tony Chachere's More Spice, and celery salt. Laura dry-rubbed the pork tenderloins with Tony Chachere's More Spice, ground black pepper, garlic powder, and sea salt. She tossed them onto the grill and nicely charred the exterior. I completed the grilling process, while Laura prepared the table. It was a delightful meal. Following dinner, we watched "Disturbia" in Blu-ray. It was a very suspenseful movie. I recommend it.

It is considerably warmer this morning than it has been for the last several days. I inadvertently left my jacket in the cargo area of Mr. Nitro yesterday afternoon and found it sufficiently warm this morning that I eschewed it. I walked from the rear parking area to the front of my office and was not particularly troubled by the temperature. The temperature display on the heating/cooling control showed the interior temperature to be 65 degrees. This is 4 degrees warmer than yesterday. The forecast for tomorrow and Sunday are now several degrees warmer than they were yesterday. This is encouraging!

Rain? It is relatively cool this morning, but there is no sight of rain (yet). The weatherpeople predicted rain in great quantity today. It is dry now, and there is little wind. The sky appears clear, but this could easily change quickly.

Yesterday was a fast day on our food calendar. The fast ended at 7 PM. I made grilled chicken and black bean enchiladas. They were delicious. I sautéed sliced white onion, minced garlic, sliced Jalapeño peppers, and shredded grilled chicken breast in extra-virgin olive oil, seasoned with Tony Chachere's More Spice and Gebhardt's chili powder. I added a can of black beans. I spooned this mixture into flour tortillas, rolled, and placed in a large Pyrex baking dish that had been sprayed with olive oil Pam. I drizzled Tony Chachere's Cajun Garlic Sauce over the enchiladas and covered with sliced cheddar cheese. When it was time to dine, Laura baked the enchiladas in the microwave on reheat until the cheese melted. At the table, we added fresh salsa and crushed red peppers.
