Imagine my surprise when I happened upon this unusual specimen while photographing birds near the lake behind my office! Click to enlarge.

Zeus' New Trick: Sunday morning, I arose at 4:45 AM. I quietly slithered from the bedroom, allowing Laura to continue sleeping. I turned on the light in the refrigerator door and toasted an English muffin. I turned on a lamp in the dining room, sat in my recliner, turned on my Microsoft wireless mouse, and pushed it across the mouse pad slightly, causing my HP notebook’s 17" LCD display to become active. I nibbled on the English muffin while solving the first of the three crossword puzzles I do each Sunday morning. (I solve five crossword puzzles each Monday; four each Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; and three each Saturday.) Suddenly, the house fell into near darkness. Only the glow of the HP’s display pierced this darkness. "The florescent light bulb in the lamp must have expired," I thought. This did not surprise me, since it was approximately five years old.

I employed the X-10 remote to engage a lamp in the living room.

Imagine my surprise moments later, as I walked into the kitchen to make a cup of green tea with honey and noticed that the cord for the lamp in the dining room had been unplugged from the wall socket, with Zeus close beside, staring up at me for kudos of his handiwork!

If Zeus is capable of this, of what other devious deeds may he be capable? My mind is awhirl considering the possibilities!

Zeus will necessitate closer watching, I fear!

The Weekend: Friday afternoon, I boiled 17 chicken wings for 20 minutes, removed from the pan, allowed them to cool, and patted them dry with a paper towel. I placed the wings in a zip-seal bag and coated them with Crystal Louisiana Hot Sauce. I sloshed the wings about in order to ensure they were fully coated with the hot sauce. I then poured in a quantity of barbecue sauce, sloshed the wings about, removed the excess air, sealed the bag, and placed it in the refrigerator. Saturday afternoon, tossed the wings onto the grill. Laura poured the sauce mixture that remained in the bag into a glass measuring cup and handed the cup and a brush to me. I grilled the chicken wings for 40 minutes—turning them and basting them with the sauce mixture every 10 minutes. Laura cooked OrIda curly fries in the conventional oven. It was a delightful meal.

Sunday morning, I put a spicy dry rub on a huge tri-tip, covered it with aluminum foil, and placed it in the refrigerator. Sunday evening, I made a salad with heart of Romaine, sliced white mushrooms, chopped green onions, and diced cluster tomatoes. I seasoned it with sea salt, ground black pepper, dried parsley, and sesame seeds. I dressed it with extra-virgin olive oil, rice wine vinegar, and lime juice. I grilled the tri-tip until it was nicely charred on the outside and rare in the center—spraying it while it roasted with a mixture of 1/3 extra-virgin olive oil and 2/3 balsamic vinegar. It was a delicious meal. We intend to enjoy a redux this evening.

The weather was mild throughout the weekend. Just as I began grilling Sunday afternoon, the wind suddenly became fierce, and the rain began falling greatly! Yikes! I pulled the hood of my jacket over my head and sallied forth—determined that I would not be deterred from my appointed task!

It appears that the freezing weather has departed. This morning, the low was 38°, and the forecast for the next five days is a low of 40°. While this is certainly cold, by my standards, it is considerably warmer than it was earlier this week—in part, of course, due to the psychological effects of seeing ice covering Mr. Nitro! Highs of 70°+ are forecast, and I eagerly await this weather. It shall be good weather for grilling this weekend.

It was 76° yesterday at 4 PM, as I grilled chicken wings! The exterior temperature sensor in Mr. Nitro showed 60° at 6:45 AM, as I drove to my office. I very nearly wore shorts this morning. I am relatively certain I shall soon wish that I had!

I relived an experience I had many years ago while sleeping last night: My rock band was playing a wedding reception in the backyard of the bride's parents' home in Chico. The band took a break, and I sauntered to the bar to get a beverage. I espied a comely young lady standing at the bar. One of the three bartenders—a pleasant young man of about 25—was making a drink for her. He was pouring from a bottle of Bacardi Gold. I turned to the young lady and said, "Are you aware of the significance of the bats on the Bacardi bottle?" "Why no," she said. She appeared very interested, so I continued, "Rum is a distillate of the sap of the Puerto Rican acacia tree. The Puerto Rican acacia tree is the favorite roost of the Puerto Rican fruit bat." "How cool," she said.

Over the years, I have often rued this meeting—wishing that I had confessed to her that my story was meant simply to entertain and bore no validity. I did not, however, and sincerely hope that she did not suffer unduly as a result of my telling of the tale.

We watched two episodes of "Shatner's Raw Nerve" last evening. I recorded these programs when they initially aired, but we had not previously found the time to view them. "Shatner's Raw Nerve" is William Shatner's own edgy and off-beat celebrity interview series. In each episode Shatner will attempt to probe his guest's most sensitive subjects and touch upon a raw nerve to explore life's most intriguing questions and unearth his guests' strange and unknown stories that are most surprising, revealing, funny, touching or bizarre.

Guests include fascinating figures from the pop culture universe such as Valerie Bertinelli, Tim Allen, Jenna Jameson, Jimmy Kimmel, Kelsey Grammer, Judge Judy and many, many more.

We were very impressed with Shatner's wit and interviewing style. We eagerly anticipate future episodes and highly recommend this new series.

Harvest Festival Tomorrow evening, Harvest Christian Center will host the annual Harvest Festival. The weather reports indicate the possibility of rain. The event is scheduled to take place regardless of the weather. Rain would, however, considerably reduce my enthusiasm with regard to photographing the event. While my Nikon D3 is "highly weatherproof," I have no desire whatever to personally determine to what extent this feature addresses rain! Yikes! I shall, therefore, pray that it does not rain until the following day.

I watched "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" on Netflix here at my office yesterday. [Hosted by Ben Stein, this controversial documentary examines how pro-intelligent design scholars and scientists are often chastised, fired or denied tenured positions by those who believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. Nathan Frankowski's film explores how scientists who believe in God are oppressed and how the acceptance of evolution may have played a role in the formation of organizations such as the Nazi regime and Planned Parenthood.] I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

Cool weather! Today is significantly cooler than it has been of late. It is forecast to be a mere 90 degrees today and 88 degrees for the next few days. This is certainly cooler than the 110+ days we experienced last week.

Corning's annual Olive Festival takes place this week. This event will certainly benefit from cooler weather.

Update on News & Review publication of Maria Muldaur photograph: Apparently, I misunderstood that my 1974 photograph of Maria Muldaur would be used in last week's Chico News & Review. For dinner last evening, we had the two remaining stuffed mushrooms from an earlier meal and a rice dish. I placed 1 1/2 cups of Calrose rice, 2 cups of water, a large white mushroom (thinly sliced), a handful of frozen corn kernels, a cluster tomato (diced), garlic powder, Tony Chachere's More Spice, Italian seasoning, and ground cumin in an electric rice cooker and pressed the on button. I reheated the stuffed mushrooms. It was a delicious meal.

Tonight, we shall have a Red Baron Supreme pizza. We shall adorn it with sliced white mushrooms, diced Jalapeño, sliced cluster tomatoes, Tony Chachere's More Spice, and provolone cheese.

Tomorrow, we shall cook a rack of baby back ribs on the barbecue—low and slow, mopping each 15 minutes with a mixture of extra-virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar, light rum, honey, Gebhardt's chili powder, Tony Chachere's More Spice, Italian seasoning, ground cumin, garlic powder, and ground ginger. I shall make a batch of spicy Cajun beans.

Sunday will begin a six-day crusade at Harvest Christian Center, featuring evangelist David Woods.

Mr. Smiley is crying this morning. His tears are tears of joy, however: He is happy that the wildfires are under control.

Laura had to work late yesterday, so I attended Bible class at Harvest Christian Center alone.

Anticipating a late dinner, I produced two enormous enchiladas prior to scurrying off to Bible class. I filled two flour tortillas with previously-grilled, sliced chicken breast, black beans, and homemade salsa. I rolled these and placed in a Pyrex baking dish. Atop them, I liberally strew shredded cheddar, jack, and Jalapeño cheeses and more of the homemade salsa. I covered with plastic wrap and stowed in the microwave oven. When I returned from Bible class, I removed the plastic wrap and cooked on "reheat" until the cheese was bubbling. It was a delightful meal.

One day a 9 year old girl was sitting in a classroom. The teacher was going to explain evolution to the children.

The teacher asked a little boy: Tommy do you see the tree outside?

The sky is blue and the birds are singing! Hopefully, the wildfires that have plagued California for weeks are nearing containment. Temperatures have dropped, winds have abated, and evacuation orders have been rescinded!

For dinner last evening, we had chicken, mashed potatoes, and celery and carrots. I diced white potatoes, peeled a head of garlic, and placed the potatoes and garlic in a covered casserole dish. I sliced celery and cut baby carrots into thirds, lengthwise. I seasoned the celery and carrots with Red Monkey lemon pepper seasoning, celery salt, and Tony Chachere's More Spice. Laura seasoned the potatoes, cooked them for 8 minutes in the microwave oven, added I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, ranch dressing, grated cheeses (cheddar, jack, and Jalapeño), and whipped with an electric mixer. She steamed the vegetables and reheated the Tyson boneless, skinless chicken breasts, which had been previously grilled. It was a delightful meal.

For dinner last evening, I made fettuccine with marinara sauce. The marinara sauce featured ground sirloin, julienned white onion, julienned Jalapeños, diced red bell pepper, sliced white mushrooms, diced Roma tomatoes, extra-virgin olive oil, Tony Chachere's More Spice, sea salt, ground black pepper, cumin, and Italian seasoning. This mixture simmered for three hours. It was a delicious meal.

(UPDATE: 7:10 AM) Yesterday, I made an appointment for 8 AM this morning to diagnose a PC and provide an estimate for repairs. Imagine my surprise when the client arrived at 7 AM! Imagine my even greater surprise when I saw the computer and realized it was a Macintosh and not a PC!

ME: I see that your computer is a Macintosh—not a PC. I do not service Macs, since I am not trained to do so.
CLIENT: What do you mean?

Rain! Just as the weatherpeople predicted, it rained yesterday. It did not rain much, and it did not rain for long, but it did rain. Everything is rain-washed and clean-looking this morning, the sun is shining brightly, the sky is blue and clear, and the birds are singing. The weatherpeople are predicting thunder showers and lightning today. It certainly does not look as if this forecast will materialize. Then again, only time will tell.

Friday evening, we viewed "The Prestige" in Blu-ray. [At the dawn of the 20th century, rival magicians Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) are desperate to reveal each other's secrets. Obsessed by the escalating competition, the two illusionists begin to perform increasingly risky tricks—which soon turn deadly. Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie also star in this taut psychological thriller from director Christopher Nolan.]

"The Prestige" is masterful storytelling, with superb direction, powerful performances from an excellent cast, awesome set and production design, and impressive cinematography.

"The Prestige" is difficult to place into any specific genre, since it blurs the fine line between mystery, drama, suspense, and fantasy. The story becomes a never-ending stream of wonder for the mind, and it is impossible to tell exactly where the story is going to lead next.

The first half of "The Prestige" is exciting and captures the viewer's attention and holds it firmly. The second half of the film, unfortunately, becomes progressively convoluted, confusing, and tedious. By the end of the film, what was once excitement has descended into ennui. I do not recommend this movie.

Saturday evening, we watched "I Am Legend" on Blu-ray [A terrible virus has spread across the planet and turned the human race into bloodthirsty monsters. Mankind's only hope for survival is scientist Robert Neville (Will Smith), the one person left unaffected by the epidemic. When he's not fighting for his life against the hordes of the infected, Neville searches for a cure to reverse the virus's effects—all the while battling his own doubt and despair as he spends every day alone.]

"I Am Legend" is a truly scary movie, because of the incredible realism. The cinematography is excellent. The set design is awesome. The special effects are impressive. Smith's portrayal of despair and borderline insanity of three years of seclusion add to the overall effect. Suspense scenes climax unexpectedly—greatly enhancing the overall scare factor.

"I Am Legend" overall is an excellent movie, and I highly recommend it.

Warm weather is coming! Today is forecast to be 72 degrees; Thursday is forecast to be 81 degrees; Friday is forecast to be 83 degrees; and Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be in the high 80s! YES!

For dinner last evening, I employed the remains of a large beef roast and the attendant juices from Sunday's dinner. I shredded the roast and simmered for two hours with two heads of peeled garlic cloves, a large sliced white onion, two large sliced Jalapeño peppers, three stalks of sliced celery, four large sliced white mushrooms, three cups of baby spinach leaves, a can of beef consommé, a half cup of Almaden Cabernet Sauvignon, two cups of brown rice, Tony Chachere's More Spice, ground black pepper, sea salt, and ground cumin. It was delicious, and a great quantity remains for a future meal.

Mmmmm-waaah! Yikes!

Our Vizio GV47LF 47" LCD HDTV arrived yesterday. My business neighbor, Corey (of Corning Auto Parts, two doors from my office), indicated a need for our 27" Hitachi CRT TV. He helped me unpack and set up the Vizio LCD unit and scampered away with the Hitachi TV and the box and packing materials for the Vizio TV. Thank you, Corey!

The Vizio unit is superb. Laura indicated a great desire for this unit. She rarely asks for anything, so it was a pleasure and a delight to be able to please her.

We watched "Night at the Museum" to initiate the new TV.

Laura declared we must now purchase an HD DVR/Satellite Receiver, add HD programming to our DirecTV service, and purchase a Blu-Ray DVD player. So it shall be!
