Amelia Earhart Day and Be Entertained

Amelia Earhart Day - Amelia Earhart Day honors a famous aviation pioneer. Amelia Earhart broke many early aviation records. Amelia Earhart Day celebrates the birth of Amelia Earhart on July 24, 1897.

Legend and mystery surround the final flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. They were on a record-setting attempt to fly around the world, when they became lost over the Pacific Ocean. On July 2, 1937, they headed on a difficult leg of the journey towards Howell Island in the Pacific. Weather conditions were less than ideal. While still in radio communication, ships on the ground confirmed that Earhart was having difficulty finding the island. Ultimately, radio communications faded and died. The plane was never heard from again.

The disappearance of Amelia Earhart's plane resulted in the largest search-and-rescue operation to date. It also sparked rumors as to what caused the disappearance. To this day, theories and speculation still exists about the cause of the disappearance. Some theories involve conspiracies and even alien abductions.

Celebrate by learning and reading about Amelia Earhart, and other female aviators. We do not recommend you spend time searching for her or her plane. The U.S. navy searched over 250,000 miles of ocean to no avail.

Wrong Way Corrigan Day, Peach Ice Cream Day, and Be Entertained

Wrong Way Corrigan Day - Today, we celebrate Wrong Way Corrigan Day. Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan … was an American aviator. In 1938, after a transcontinental flight from Long Beach, California, to New York, he flew from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, to Ireland, even though he was supposed to be returning to Long Beach.

He claimed that his unauthorized flight was due to a navigational error, caused by heavy cloud cover that obscured landmarks and low-light conditions, causing him to misread his compass.

Corrigan’s “error” caught the imagination of the American public and inspired many jokes. The nickname "Wrong Way Corrigan" passed into common use and is still mentioned (or used as satire) when someone has the reputation for taking the wrong direction.

Peach Ice Cream Day - Today is also Peach Ice Cream Day. I do not intend to take any wrong turns today. In particular, I shall avoid unintentionally traveling to Ireland. I shall, however, snack upon two beautiful peaches Laura lovingly stowed away in my tote.

Peaches are one of the best flavors of the summer season. People wait for about 48 weeks for the peach harvest to ripen. And, when it does, for a few short weeks, its "peach everything!" In celebration of the harvest, the ice cream companies make peach ice cream. It is difficult to find other times of the year. Most major ice cream makers only produce it during the summer.
