Born on this Day in History: September 1, 1957 - Gloria Estefan (1957 - ) Born Gloria Fajardo in Havana, singer Gloria Estefan fled Cuba when Castro gained power. In 1978, she married keyboardist Emilio Estefan, and their first Miami Sound Machine disco hit was "Dr. Beat" in 1980. In 1990, Estefan suffered a broken back in a car accident, but made it through a grueling recovery
