Born on this Day in History: March 13, 1950 - William H. Macy made his film debut in Somewhere in Time (1980). In 1991, he had a leading role in Homicide, which earned him good reviews and raised his profile in Hollywood. His career got an even bigger boost when he joined the cast of ER in 1994. In 1996, Macy landed a memorable role in Fargo, and a slew of other high-profile films followed, winning Emmys and getting Oscar nods along the way.

On this Day in History: March 13, 1881 - An anarchist from the radical group People's Will throws a bomb which disrupts Czar Alexander II's motorcade. He then throws a second bomb, causing injuries from which Alexander bleeds to death.

Born on this Day in History: March 9, 1940 - Raúl Juliá was a Puerto Rican actor who fell in love with the theater and films as a child. He moved to New York City in 1965 to further his dreams as an actor and won his first Tony award nomination in 1972, the first of four nominations during his career. Despite his accomplishments in theater, he is best remembered for his work in film, including Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Addams Family.

On this Day in History: March 9, 1170 - In Essex, a UFO is spotted over St. Ostwyth, manifesting itself as a "wonderfully large dragon ... borne up from the Earth through the air". The craft kindled the air and destroyed a house.

Born on this Day in History: March 8, 1945 - Micky Dolenz was born in Los Angeles. He had a few television roles and played with bands before being cast in "The Monkees," a show about a fictitious rock band. Though made for TV, The Monkees had real-life hits and struggled against their "Pre-Fab Four" image. The series was canceled in 1968 and the band split in 1969. Dolenz has appeared on Broadway and worked as a tv director.

On this Day in History: March 8, 1968 - A Soviet submarine sinks in the Pacific Ocean, killing all 97 crew members aboard. Later in the year a U.S. submarine secretly retrieves an encryption machine, codebooks, and nuclear warheads from the Soviet vessel. A further bold attempt is made in 1974 to bring up the entire submarine using the CIA ship Glomar Explorer, built by Howard Hughes. That mission supposedly fails, and is made public by the Los Angeles Times to the great embarrassment of the Agency.

Born on this Day in History: March 7, 1970 - Rachel Weisz began her career on stage in a student drama group at college. After appearing on television, notably on the BBC series "Scarlet and Black" with Ewan McGregor, Weisz made her cinematic debut in 1995's Chain Reaction. She followed with a riveting performance as a spoiled teenager in Bernado Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty. Weisz won an Academy Award for her role in The Constant Gardener.

On this Day in History: March 7, 1990 - The CIA stages a fake satellite explosion of a KH-11 spy satellite code named Misty which was in low earth orbit. Both American and Russian sources reported Misty's destruction, but amateur astronomers have shown that this was a deception to allow it to achieve a higher, less detectable orbit.
