Born on this Day in History: December 7, 1932 - Born Edna Rae Gillooly, Ellen Burstyn found her breakthrough role in 1971's The Last Picture Show. She solidified her career with an iconic part in The Exorcist, and a best actress Oscar for Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Burstyn also won a Tony Award in 1975, served as president of Actor's Equity, and headed the Actors Studio for several years.

Born on this Day in History: December 6, 1920 - Dave Brubeck studied composition before working as a jazz pianist and formed a quartet with saxophonist Paul Desmond in 1951. His use of unconventional meters contributed to his huge appeal: the recording of Desmond's "Take Five" became the first jazz instrumental to sell more than a million copies and brought many new listeners to jazz, particularly on college campuses during the 1950s and '60s.

On this Day in History: December 6, 1980 - Televangelist Jim Bakker of the PTL ministry has tryst with Jessica Hahn. PTL later pays Hahn hush money, but seven years later the incident becomes public and Bakker resigns in disgrace.

On this Day in History: December 1, 1997 - Member of the Georgia Senate Ralph Abernathy attempts to smuggle marijuana into the US from Jamaica in his underwear. He is caught by a drug-sniffing canine and fined $500. Abernathy is the son of the famous civil rights leader of the same name who was Martin Luther King's lieutenant. In January he is censured by the Georgia State Senate.
